Well I have been in a drout of late when it comes to the old steel head, but once again perseverance payed off. Friday I drove 2 hours to a good steel spot only to find that the dam was shut way down. With low clear water my chancs of finding a willing winter steeleywas slim, but I fished anyway. After one hour I gave up and headed home, alittle bit down and alot tired. The next day after work the sun was out and the temp was around 40 so I couldnt resist. Even thow it is early in the season I headed toa river 2min from home, not expecting much the first 4in smolt I caught was a treat, but not what I had hoped for. Not two castes later, in the same hole, I got on to a nice fish. With shelf ice on both sides of me and a down tree below it was a hard fight. I had to keep him out of the trees and try not to fall in. After about a five of fighting it was over and I was holding my first steel head of 2006, not a bad fish at all, around 5lb, full off color, a great fish for a picture but I left the camera at home because I was all by my self.
Well once again I am on the rigth track and hope this year will be alittle better then last.
Sounds good Guss.I bet those fresh salmon taste great. Josh..if your reading this the local pros tell me that our bass have not spawn yet. Before church I found them in 15 ' of water. Not one hit on anything. I will keep it up and hopefully catch a decent Florida bass to share with you all.
Guss..keep on fishing brother.Eventually you and I will hit those bass just right. For now keep that rod bent double on those salmon.Never caught one inmy life.

Yah Chuck Steelhead is ok but it is not as good as the other Pacific salmon, Kings and Cohos are alot better and yes they do taste great. I think the best part about the salmon is thatthere is so much meat on one fish, a 12lb salmon has around 6 meals in it, so you dont have to clean fish all day.I didnt keep it, never keep steel, I like catching them way to much and I still have alot of king salmon in the frezer from last summer.
Is it hard to catch Bass when they are notspawning down south? It seems to me that the bass up here areeasier when they are not on beds, it is hard to get close enuf to the beds to even get a cast. I catchmost of my big bass just after theyget done with the spawn and move to deeper water.
