Default Got some stupid questions about bass boat.

Sorry fellows ,

But I have some foolish questions.
1.My son just bought a 17' Fisher with a 115 HP Mariner . He has a hard time starting it. We noticed you have to push the key mechanism to choke it. How does that work? And how much should he choke it.?

2. The boat is dull because it is a 95 Whaat can he use to restore the finish. It goes 42 MPH

3. Also is it hard to find a spare tire/wheel?

4. What is the proper way to start this boat?
Thanks Chuck

Default RE: Got some stupid questions about bass boat.

Chuck I can help with a few of these.

To start - Pump the ball tell it gets firm. When turning the key push in to choke it. On my boat I do it every time I turn the key (unless it is warm) , but every engin is different, so see what works for you. If you can get it started but it cuts out right away there is a way to make the boat idle faster. On the throttle the sould be a button (located right at the turning point of the throttle) push this in and then push the throttle, it will rev the engin but not spin the prop. If there is no button the throttle handle shold pull out doing the same thing. Hope you fallowed that mess.
The bigest thing for my boat is to pump the ball, and not over turn the engin. Also check your plugs, and get some extras when ya buy some.

As for the finish I have no idea, never had a paint job I wanted to save.

The spare should be easy to find, for the most part they are standered on all trailers. I cant remember what I droped on mine.

Thanks Guss,
What do you mean about over turning the motor. He was cranking it pretty long. About how many seconds should he be cranking that bad boy each time?

Thanks

Also...when you hit the choke are you squirting gas or engaging a selenoid switch of some kind?
Thanks,
Chuck

What I mean by over cranking is holding the key down and letting the started just spin, this will flud the engine or drain your batt. I hold the key for maybe 1 or 2 seconds if it dosent goI will let it sit for a second and do it agin. somemotors are coldstarters and need alittle more care when starting.

As for the choke,I think it just opens up the air intake (not sure at all), squirting gas in the engine is done by a primer ball, on a small lawn mower engin.I wish i knew more about engins, would save me alot of money. I am sure someone else will know alot more then me about this.

Good luck and have fun, soak up those last days of summer, oww wait you are fromFlorida, its always summer there.

One thing I personally do is get a little bit of gas and mix it with a 50:1 ratio. I then put it in a CLEAN spray bottle and spray it into the carbs the first time I start it each day. You may need to clean up the carbs a little more frequently, but its worth it.

thanks Josh,
I particularly don't like those big boats. It taskes up too much room to park and I'm sure it's expensive to work on. I'd be thrilled with a 15 HP on a 14' Jon boat. The only thing good about this beast is it opens up more opportunities for bigger lakes. It is pretty fast.42 MPH
