I don't know what you fish for most but You don't need to spend a lot of money for a good Combo. I fish mostly for Pike and Walleyes. I like the Ugly Stck lite rods for Pike because they have a habit of grabbing the lure right at the boat then going under the boat. That can be death on a stiff Graphite rod. I like the Lightnig Pro series rods for sensitivity and light wt. I have some G Loomis Rods and they are fine rods, However there are some really good quality Rods for under a 100 bucks.. The Sedona is a lot of reel for the money and I have a 1000 and a 2000 series. I also Have a Symetry. They are a good reel for about 100 bucks. The Cardinal and Michel reels will also last a long time for 30-60 bucks.. I am just getting ready to go to Canada pike and Walleye fishing. Ugly stick lites will get the most use. I have one IM7 Garcia Graphite rod that I like for Walleye as well. Leaving Sept 2nd.

I agree ...save some of that money. I can think of alot of great combinations for less than a 100 And I consider myself a pretty serious fishermen. Most of my rods are Lightening Rods. At Walmart they cost 30.00 They have alot of nice 60.00 reels. I fish alot and they are still holding up. This would give you extra cash for those 7.00 lures.I out fished an entire lake of boaters on Sat. morning. Secret weapon...... A 6 1/2 foot Lightening Rod with a 103 Abu Garcia Spinning reel . Lure ...3/8 ounce white Rooster Tail. Rod and reel cost 70.00 including tax.

I believe the reel has 5 bearings.

Bigbass the other guys bring up some good points. I personally like Shimano reels and have about a dozen of them in different combinations. The problem with graphite is the lighter they get the more fragile they are. I just broke another the other day when the line looped around the tip when I was trying to get a small pike off the hook. I played it out and grabbed it and thought I had it paralyzed by squeezing on the gill covers but my grip slipped and I dropped the fish. All that caused the slack line to wrap around the tip and you know the rest of the story. The rod was a Bass Pro Extreme rod. If it was an ugly stick then it probably wouldn't have happened. I still like the rods and usually manage to break one every year usually due to my own carelessness.

My opinion varies greatly on what the rod's intended use is.......without knowing what you plan on doing with it I cant say..

I would say to stop worrying about impressing your friends. It's a costly trap.

I agree with Chuck on this one. If it were meI would start to gather rods and reelsfor all the different fishing applications. I like to crappie fish and I have a 9' Silstar Pinnacle UL with a Shimano Sonora 1500FA reel and 4 pound test. I use it as a spring bobber set up for all flat fish in the shallows. My crappie deep water summer rod and reel is a 6 1/2 foot Fenwick ULwith another Shimano Sonora 1500FA reel with 4 pound test. I have several bass set ups all rigged for different applications such as top water, Carolina rigging, tubes Texas rigged, Spinner baitetc. Most of my reels are Shimano but I do have a couple of older Garcia level winds and one Quantum. Never mind what your friends think it is what you think that counts.
