Default trolling for help

The other day my Father and I were out trolling for salmon up on the lake here in NH. I don't have a kicker motor for trolling so I threw two five gallon buckets out the back to try and slow us down a little. I got the speed down to an average 2.5 - 2.9mph but heard I should be around 1.5 - 2mph.
I checked the local boat shops for a kicker and can't see me buying one at this time [&o] In Cabelas I saw this trolling plate and was wondering if anyone has tried it. I might try a drift sock or sea anchor first unless I hear good things about this trolling plate. Thanks

Default RE: trolling for help

did you try backtrolling? thats basically like trolling in reverse, should keep you at a slow speed. you might have issues with water splashing back at you, so just get some mountable boards you keep it from becoming a problem. i know alot of guys backtroll with suckers for muskie in thte late fal up north. backtrolling works good for walleyes do, dunno why it wouldnt work for salmon.
