Default Ling Cod

Went fishing for lakers this weekend up on Lake Ontario and caught a Ling Cod. He weighed 8 1/2 lbs, but faught like he weighed 25! What an ugly fish! I didn't know what it was. I took a couple of pics and let him go. I'll post some pics when the are developed. I caught him on down riggers in about 140 ft of water.
Has anyone here ever cought one of these? Was this a good sized one? I really don't know a thing about them. Can't find much info. on the freshwater ones... only the saltwater ones.

We also got 5 lakers, but only 1 wasn't a slot fish. 12 lb 31". Nice fish.

8 1/2 lbs. is a good one. Excellent eating. Ugly yes. Fillet and skin then batter and fry like you you would with saltwater cod.
I've caught many icefishing after dark on lakes known for laketrout & whitefish.
Also some poach them & serve with drawn butter (poor mans lobster). Don't seem to freeze well (become a little mushy).

Same difference. And the best eating you will find. We catch a lot of them at Oahe in SD. We almost always catch them at night fishing for channel cats.

Is burbot the other name for them? I should have kept him. I didn't really know any better. Is 8 & 1/2 a good one for fresh water? He was a strong fish. Alot of fun to catch.
I'll post a pic when I get it.
