You really dont need either to kill a whitetail, unless you prefer shelling out big bucks for ammo. honestly i would go with a remington core lokts or winchester power points either of those is more then adequate for killing whitetail. good luck

Barnes are a little overkill for deer. Unless they are big deer. I highly recommend the silvertip. Unless you got a magic gun like HDW that magically shoots coreloks stay away.

I do alot of ripping on corejunks. But before I started reloading, I only used Remington Corejunks. I killed probably 40 to 50 deer with em. All shots were under 75 yards in WV and Ky. But then I got this sickness of reloading. And that led to demanding rifles shoot nickels at 100 yards. No, you don't need this accuracy. But I found out I enjoy shooting more than gun hunting. So I tried to use Core's but it wasn't the same. I started seeing that they were not uniform in shape, wieght. And saw the difference in using them or using Sierra Gamekings, or Bullistic tips. But for deer, they are fine. I just love handloading, and seeing the effects of different bullets on wounds and all.

I shot win ball silvertips in all of my guns before I got Bigcountrys sickness and started reloading, and they performed well, if you dont mind a little "trauma" inside the animal, I can tell you that when i switched from them back to copper jacketed bullets, I had to really scrub my barrel to get all of the coating that the WSBST left in my barrel, if you shoot them stay with them, dont bounce back n forth.

wow HDW and Bigcountry, it sounds like this dispute needs to be settled on the range, I can see it now, HDW and Bigcountry, each shoot 10 three shot groups, the one with the total lowest inches of grouping wins!!! And then Mossy gets to bring in his sleeper and make yall go home weeping!!!!

Only rules for me and HDW is he has to use Coreloks, and I am free to use handloads. To bad he's all the way out in the desert.

Magic?? LOL, I dont know why my gun shoots them so well....... my rifle isnt anything special its a Rem M700 Mountain rifle in .308 win, well my marlin 30-30 shoots them well too..... My handloads are great thanks to advice i followed from you big country. If i ever had the oppertunity to shoot against you I will be using my handloads. The other day I bought a new box of core lokts for my 308 just to see if they were much different then the older stuff I was shooting before, still good enough for deer hunting but not nearly as consistent as I like my best group was 2 in the bull and 3 an inch or so to the right. I'm thinking core lokts just arent as good as they used to be atleast not as good as the 2 cases i bought 9 years ago.

yeah its funny here 2 guys who Bigcountry has helped immensely are talking trash to him about shooting groups that if it werent for him, we either wouldnt be shooting, or would have spent countless hours/money/frustration to find. No Bigcountry, I'll bow out gracefully and just be glad you helped me!! p.s. brought the 300 rum home from Canada gave it a good cleaning, went to the range on wed and it shot 3 half inch groups in a row!! Man one thing Ive learned is that gun likes to be REAL clean, not sure if its the gun or that specific caliber, but it cant go more than 20 rounds before it needs to be fully scrubbed of all copper (soaking with benchrest overnite). With the groups its shooting and the infrequency I will be shooting it, I dont mind cleaning it so often.

I am very greatful for the advice big country has given me, thanks to him I have great load for my .308. On the other hand I never intended for him to feel like i was talkin trash about grouping. Just for some reason I have had very good luck with core lokts while it seems everyone else has not. In another thread I wasn't trying to sell everyone off on core lokts, All i was doing was expressing my opinion on how i feel towards core lokts and that they have been good to me and that i don't think they are junk. well atleast not the older core lokts after shooting that last box I'm begining to see what others have experienced, but in pinch if i dont have any handloads made up and need ammo for hunting I will stick with the core lokts, since their POI is within a inch of my handloads.

Oh come on guys, I haven't helped either one that much. As my friend (who uses coreloks) told me the other day, I have become a bullet snob. Actually this morning for the hey of it, I took a 8 pt with my 270 and coreloks. I knew shots would be under 20 yards. Well, I shot and it died. How boring. No explosions of blood. No mushroom found. No failure. How boring. Reason I used Coreloks, is I used a 7400 and they cycle well. As I said, I do have a FN Tactical rifle that does shoot coreloks well.

Actually it was a 4 point. Can't lie. I about cryed when I walked up to it, and the other half of the rack was broken off. Now I got to shoot 2 does to be able to shoot another buck.
