Default CZ 550 rifle

I recently bought a CZ 550 American in 6.5x55 Swedish. I put a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on it. I have not yet hunted with this rifle but I've had it to the range. With inexpensive PMC factory loads this rifle has given me 5 shot 100 yard groups that range from 1.25" down to 0.75". I haven't yet had the time to work up any reloads with it but I have great hopes.

The only two negatives I have about this rifle are that it is rather heavy and that the tigger has just a wee bit of creep to it. I must quickly add that it was a stretch to find anything negative. The barrel is about 24", so of course it will be a bit heavier that rifles with a 22" tube. It probably would not be as much fun to carry up hills as my Model 70 Featherweight is. The single set trigger breaks at right around 4 lbs even with the creep, which is actually pretty good. With the set feature it breaks somewhere between 1 and 2 lbs, great when shooting paper but perhaps less useful in the field. Everything else about this rifle is first class in my opinion. It compares very favorably with my Remington, Winchester and Ruger rifles in terms of fit and finish.

Does anyone else have one of thes rifles, and if so, how do you like it?

If CZ makes it in the cartridge I desire, then it is my #1 pick.

Look at your instruction manual. You can easily adjust the trigger length of pull. Shorten it up and any creep becomes a non-issue. Personally I love the set trigger --- set for shooting paper, regular for shooting game ---- 1 pound and 3.75 pounds respectively.

Double square bridge mauser, controlled round feed, and long barrels --- what's not to like?

Like I said, I really had to stretch to find something to gripe about! I will check the manual out for that adjustment, but the darned rifle shoots better than I can anyway, and I'm not sure it's worth the effort. (It was DEFINITELY worth the effort to adjust my Model 70 trigger, which came out of the factory at a gawdawful 8 lbs, and in ten minutes' time was down to a crisp 4 lbs.)

One thing I am beginning to be intrigued by is the big bore CZ Safari Magnums. I have no earthly need for a gun that can tackle African game, but one might be fun to own anyway. The CZs can be had for about half the price of the Rugers or Winchesters, and in my opinion lose absolutely nothing by comparison. I've never fired anything with that much recoil (unless accidentally simultaneously discharging both barrels from an old Stevens 12 guage counts[:@]) so I'm not sure how much "fun" one of these would actually be but the intrigue is still there.

I adjusted the trigger on my CZ 550 according to the instructions in my manual, and it was very easy...

There has been considerable discussion of the CZ rifles in other forums and it is generally considered that they are an excellent value..One quality that seems especially consisitent is thier accuracy...They seem to be tack drivers right out of the box, regardless of what cartridge they are chambered for..

Mine is a 9.3 x 62, hardly a cartridge for which one would expect, or NEED varmint rifle accuracy, but it shoots sub-moa groups with full power hunting loads...

That's also a very useful and interesting caliber...It's powerful enough for cape buffalo with the right bullets, but also works well for game as small as whitetails with ruining a lot of meat or kicking your head off..
