RE: shotgun for a ten year old
If he is a big kid I would go with the Winchester 1300 compact (youth) it has a 24" barrel and a 13" length of pull ( same as most 20 gau. youth) and 6.75 lb. He could start out with 7/8 or 1 oz reloads and the kick would be less than a 20 . The Rem. 20 gau youth weighs 6 lb. When he grows you can just buy a longer stock not a new gun

not only becoming scarce its almost impossible to get shells, i would go with the youth remington model with the switch out stock, great investment, he can hunt with that gun untill he is your age.

I am a benelli man myself....i like the nova pump, but i my friend has a 20 guage 870 youth...and it is not a bad little gun to get started on...i would recomend the 870 youth

When i was 10 years old i got a remington 20 gauge 870 express. The youth model was to small for me. Ive used it on squirrel, grouse, and about every other kind of bird. A year after i got my 20 gauge i wanted a 12 gauge, i wish i had gotten the 12 in the first place so i could have saved some money. The 12 2 3/4 doesnt kick much more then a 20 and youll never need anything bigger then a 12, but i turkey hunt, thats why i wanted a twelve for longer rrange shots and bigger shell size. The 20 gauge will take down anything, but sooner or later, youll have to get him a 12 so id do it right now if hes not recoil shy.
I've got three 12 ga and a 16 ga he's a little shy of the 16 so for now the 12 is out of the question . I've seen new single shot 20's for $80 so I might go that route for a start

I would think twice about that, a single shot is quite light in weight and even with a 20 ga shell they kick about like a 12 ga pump action. the more metal in a gun the less it kicks more weight to absorbe the recoil.
The cheap route isnt always the best route besides you can pick up a good condition used mossberg or remington pump shotgun for just a little more then you would pay for that single shot.
