Default 7 STW vs 7 Weatherby Mag

Just recieved an issue of Deer and Deer Hunting. There was an article in there written by Bryce Towsley about long range hunting. In this article he basically compared a 7 STW to a 7 Weatherby mag and then goes on to say that the next and ultimate step is the 7 Ultramag saying it is the best of the 7MM's in this respect. Is this man just plain full of crap or what?

I have two 7mmstw's and a 7mmultramag.Despite using over 10gr more powder my ultramag only manages 50 fps more velocity than the stw's.The 7mm bore is just too small to take advantage the ultramag case. When you move up to .308" bullets though mt 300 ultramags produce more than 100fps more velocity than my 300wby mag.

i have a relative that has a stw and that gun is deadly on deer at any distance. i have been recommended the mag by a number of people that have them but i still prefer the stw after shooting both guns

I would say he is right. If that 50-100fps means that much too you. I love the STW calibers. I would pick either STW or RUM over the Weatherby. Don't like alot of freebore, and really don't like belts. I have been thru my RUM days. I still like shooting it. Its just a target rifle now with a not very good choice for a target round, but still works long range. I believe barrel life would be alot greater with the STW. But I am really into WSM's these days. What can I say, I love em all.

As Stubblejumper pointed out, there isn't that much difference and the cartridge appears to be underloaded to boot by the manufacturers.
