First I would like to say this is one of the better forums that I have read. I am looking to buy a new 22LR rifle. I have settled on a 10/22, but was wondering if anyone has had experience with moding one. I would like to make it a little tack driver. Should I just buy the base model and start from their, or is the target model worth getting and using its barrel insted of picking up a new stock and barrel for the base model. Thx for any info.
Buy a used one for under 100 dollars. Get to work with a feather titanium trigger, then get ya one of the many high priced barrels and stocks, and see those one hole groups. Be warned before going down this road. You can get real sucked in modifying the 10/22.
The 10/22 is one of the few guns you can buy for $100 and it end up being a bottomless pit for money. So many toys you can put on one it isn't even funny. I took one unfired, put on a heavy barrel, changed out the hammer and sear, and put on a laminate thumbhole stock. It is a tack driver but I could never get enough money from selling to cover the money and time I have in it. Sure is fun though.
customizing a 10/22 is much better than a 10/22T. I went with a Green Mountain barrel, Hogue Overmolded stock and an aftermarket hammer/sear assembly that I bought from Cabela's. My dad has the Target model and mine puts his to shame on the range.[8D]

Thx for info I am going into this realizing it is going to be a small money pit but it will be a fun money pit unlike say buying a house built in the 40's.
if you want to put a target barrel on the base model you will need a new stock, but if you buy the 10/22T the stock is alreay cut to fit a heavy barrel.
Since your on the subject of 10/22. Is the Voguartsen trigger from Cabelas for the 10/22 worth the money or would you have other sites that would supply good trigger??
If you want a semi auto to get your jolly's that fine. But if you want a serious tack driver why not buy an Anshutz and be done with it. It will cost almost the same as you're 10/22 rig by the time you're done "trick'n it " out.
I've shoot 3 different 10/22's that were modified to the max and not one is as or more accurate than an Anshutz.
