Default buying used shotgun

Hey everyone. My friends just introduced me to the sport of shooting clay pigeons. It is a blast! i've always loved shooting guns and i've never owned one. I'm looking for a cheap shotgun to shoot trap with. I don't intend at all to go hunting, but it'd be nice to be able to if the opputunity ever arose. Everything i've been reading has pointed heavily toward the remington model 870. I went to my local pawn shop and saw a few of the different variations of it for around 200$...i wouldn't say they were in the best shape, but the action felt good on them.

can anyone tell me what i should look for when buying a used gun? or is it just a better idea to buy a brand new gun? i don't need a super nice gun, i just wanna shoot clays. Preferably 12 gauage, but i could deal with 20...any advice would be great! thanks in advance for the advice!

i am sure you can find some really nice used guns out there, but at thw same time, you dont know what happened to them, and why they are being sold. its like buying a used car, its a gamble. personally with the prices of a pump so inexpensive, i dont think its worth going used. for instance i baught a benelli nova pump for $269 new, and i think its the greatest pump out there. many other people can agree with me out there who own them. that doesnt mean that the rem 870 isnt good, but to me i feel my nova is better. to a rem. man i bet he thinks his is better all personal preference. the 870 new falls into the same catagory about 250 or somewere there. not sure what sporting good stores you have around you, but you can take a look at these online websites. www.gunbroker.com(auction that has both enw and used guns) www.gunsamerica(anotehr auction, but prices seem inflated there) and www.http://www.dnrsports.com (actual store, that has some good prices) what state do you live by the way? good luck

Hey man, thanks for the info.

I'm in WA state. I'll definitely have to try out a benelli, it's hard when none of your friends have one though...

Yeah, i thought i could save a bunch of money going used, but it's starting to appear less and less to be true. A used remington 870 for 210..or a brand new one for like 250...260...that's totally not worth it. Do you think i could find a used gun for more like 125? that would definitely make it worth it to me...

thanks for the help!

you may find one for that price used, but it may take a while. just keep checking the sites i posted. also i would go to gunshows in your county or city. many gunshow's have used guns for a great prices. but if you cant find a big difference in prices i would go new. check out benelli on the website at www.benelliusa.com the nova pump is there most affordible gun they have, and its built great. 3 years ago when i was in the market for a pump, i went and saw both the 870 and the nova. after i felt both and closely examined them, i thaught the nova was better, and fit better. i also felt it was made better, but thats my personal thaught. i really liked how the nova had the versility of having up to a 3 1/2 shell, and it has This button on the underside of the fore-end that activates a shell stop that allows the chambered shell to be removed without releasing rounds from the magazine. its pretty cool, so you can use to when you want to quickly change rounds, cross a street, or anything. i baught my gun from "Galyans" not sure if you have any in WA, but they have some good prices like i said my nova was $269 new and i couldnt be happier. . good luck

On a used gun, the asking price is only a starting point. You can usually make an offer for less, or get them to throw in some ammo to sweeten the deal a bit.

Here in Houston you can routinely buy a Remington 870 pump for $219 new. They often go on sale for $199. Guess it depends on what part of the country you live in for price. Whatever you do, don't buy a Mossberg. They are only good for boat paddles.
