RE: Shotgun Barrel Porting
MD Piney,
As a competitive clay target shooter I can tell you this, my opinion are......
The porting on shotgun barrels do more to reduce muzzle rise/flip than to reduce felt recoil. Porting does increase the noise some and also causes lead spitting (as the shot moves across the porting, it can shave the wad and lead shot). This can cause some discomfort for shooter on either side of you while you shoot. As in a hunting situation not a problem but I speak of this as clay shooter in which there are many games where shooters stand right next to one another, such as "Annie Oakley".
To reduce felt recoil I would suggest adding some weight to the gun, such as putting some shot into the butt of the gun or adding a mercury device. Lengthening the forcing cone also helps a great deal as adding a good quality recoil pad. It sounds as if this is a deer gun and isnt shot all that much so doing some of this might be cost prohibitive. I can shoot 100's of rounds a day, 10'000's a year and anything that can cut felt recoil is a boost to me.
I do have a couple of guns with porting, it does help with follow up shots but you are shooting a single shot that really doesnt do much for you.I wouldnt port the gun. Like I suggested , try adding weight the the gun, it's the cheaspest way out, next a good recoil pad and then the forcing cone work.
just some thoughts...doubleA
