I think i have purchased two of the best guns ever made. I bought a 45-70 for me and a 30-30 for my boy. They are both stainless steel and lever action. My son loves his gun. I puchased these for hog hunting and they work great. For both of these guns it cost me a little over $900. We took them to the range this weekend and they are super accurate right out of the box. These are both very good guns and recommend buying either of them.

Good for you! If you use these weapons sensibly, there is no deer out ther that will get away from either calibers, they are very efficient! That H&R that DANTHEHUNTER has is a cool gun, cousin has one and it is fun, but HEAVY!!!

Mine is a Marlin 1895 SS in 45/70. I have to agree with your opinion. Mine is an early 1990's model, with microgroove rifling. It is surprisingly accurate (to me anyway), and handy as a bugger.
If you want a real thrill try out the Buffalo bore , or garrett cartridges. The 405 gr. buffalo bores will go through just about anything . And with enough practice you can make 200 to 250 yd. shots with confidence. Strat out with 405 gr. remingtons they are close to cowboy loads and work your way up. I also like PMC 300 gr. they seem to be very accurate.
Hey, thanks for welcoming me to the boards. On mine I got a non ported barrel. We took them out to the range and shot 2 boxes of 30-30 and one box of 45-70. Out of curiosity what is the biggest grain there is for a 45-70 ? The only place i could find ammo is at out local Academy and it only had 405 grain. One more question. What is the best grain for the 30-30 and my 45-70 to take down hogs ?

With the 30/30 I'g go for the 170 grain, or whatever the heaviest bullet is. With the 45/70 I'd use a RN or Flatpoint Bullet, in just about whatever wieght you want. I think they are all heavy enough.
My Marlin 30/30 likes 150's better than 170's but thats just my gun & yours may differ.
For my 45/70 I havent found a round it doesnt like but I'd steer clear of hollow points as I had one break up on me a few years back.
I mostly use factory Rem 405's & more recently PMC's 405 grain hardcast cowboy loads. Both are lackluster velocity wise but deer dont seem to notice & once a big heavy slug like that gets going its tough to stop.
As for the heaviest bullet I think buffalo bore has a 500 grain load.

You might want to look at the ballistics before you go buying too much ammo for your 45-70. I shoot 300 grainers out of my 1895 and I have a nice black bear with this bullet. They are pretty devastating. The bear dropped after going about 35 yds. Never even had a chance for a follow-up. I'm sure it would work equally well on hogs.
