Default rem .17 hmr auto vs. bolt action

i plan to buy a .17 cal. rimfire.it will be used for squirrel, beaver other varmits and general shooting.is there a big difference in the accuracy between the rem. model 597 and the marlin bolt action.i realize that the bolt will be more accurate than the auto, but is the difference really that great.i am not going to shoot bench matches or competetion but understand this cal. is very accurate.

If you want a functional firearm stay away from the Remington 597. It is junk. Jams constantly, piss poor trigger, feeding problems, etc. Makes a pretty good tomato stake.

I have always preferred bolt actions to pumps. The bolt action is almost always more acurate.

I don't know about you but when I get a auto I get carried away with shooting and the ammo for the 17 is on the high $$ side .. the bolt would be my choice, It would make me make the first shot count ..Bill

Get a bolt! I've got the Ruger VMBBZ 77/17 and it's a sweet little rifle! It doesn't matter what brand you really get, Ruger, Savage, Marlin, CZ, they all make good bolt action 17 HMR's. Just depends on how many $$$ you want to drop!

I read and heard many fine comments on the CZ line of bolt actions. I have since placed a CZ-452 American in the .17 caliber on lay-a-way, and should be picking it up this comming week. Here's the link to that very gun. Price at Gander Mountain was $341.00.

Don't listen to these people get the 597, you won't be sorry. That bolt won't shoot any more accurate and you get that second(and third, fourth, and) shot. I have two of these and they are not a peice of junk. Get the Remington.

Get the bolt, you only need one shot. Gotta love those Marlin VS's.

i appreciate all your comments guys.i bought the 597 at the last minute. i am sighting it in with the cci hp and have some hornady ballistic tip ordered also .i will tell you all the REAL facts in a couple of weeks after i have shot this gun with both shells.the 597 only has a 20" barrel,so it will be interesting to see the accuracy out to 150 yards..
