Default how much eye relief?

Hi everybody!

Just want see how much eye relief you guys and gals have been succesful with on your shotguns. I have an 870 which shoots the lightfields great, but am going to mount a scope on it this week.

I have three inches of eye relief on my Omega, but i don't think that is going to cut it for the big dog.

I have been looking at the Bushnell Sportsman shotgun which has 4.3 inches, or another Bushnell Trophy like the one on my Omega if I can get enough relief out of it.

Thanks for all of your responses.

I have a 42mm Bsa red dot scope on my 870 and it works great. I only use it for turkey hunting tho.

I would go with a minimum of 3.5" of eye relief. If you can find a good scope with more available I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I don't think you can get into a situation where you would have too much. A split eyebrow leads to awful flinching. If you're not sure of your equipment it also leads to little confidence and flinching.

3.5" min is what I would look for in eye relief on anything with a healthy kick. I had a 3.0 eye relief scope on 300 wby. and it was marginal, I ended up opting for 4.0" as I came close to be SF'd on several occasions.

Thanks for all of the responses guys. I am thinking of going to a scope that Bushnell has with either 4.3 inches, or a new one thay have with 6. I am only going to be shooting slugs out of my 870 for deer hunting.

My turkey gun is good to go with no scope.

I may take a look at the red dots as well after your responses.

4 to 5 inches of eye relief for a shotgun is going to work out better for you . Also, you may want to reconsider using the sportsman for a shotgun. The recoil on a shotgun is very different than it is on a rifle. They require a little beefier scope. Either use an actual shotgun/Black Powder scope or medium to high quality rifle scopes can be used. I suggest using a scope with a retail of over $100.00 when using a rifle scope. If you stay above that, you shouldn't have a problem.
