Default 30 30 marlin, needs a scope

I got a 30 30 a few trs ago, and have only shot it twice. Not muck use for it here in IN.

Aynway, what would be a good scope for this gun? I just want to have it ready incase I get the chance to go out of state.

Also what' s so bad with the 30 30? I don' t know why I got it(christmas present). I would have told him I wanted a better shot gun. Everyone' s always telling me, you should have got a 30 .6 , or a 7mm.

I bought a cheap 3-9 at walmart for $29. It works great on my Marlin. We shot 1 ragged holes at 25 yards last night of sandbags. I think a 3030 is fine if you are shooting less then 100 yards.

Try a low power variable in the 1.5-4 or 1.5-6 range. For this rifle you don' t need a scope with an objective larger than 32mm.

There is nothing wrong with the 30-30. It is not the flattest shooting cartridge in the world but out to 200 yards it is very deadly. At my local range I have seen some gentleman make some shots at distances that I would not have believed without actually being there.

If I were to use the rifle I would shoot Winchester 170gr. Power Points.

Superpig is right. A low power variable COMPACT scope with an objective of no more than 32mm. I hunt with this combination and it is great. The addition of a scope can turn this rifle into a VERY accurate one also. Mine will shoot 1-1.25" groups at 100 yards with handloads. Recoil is nothing either.

I love my Marlin 30-30. It was passed down from my father, but it has seen a great number of deer fall to it. They couldn' t tell if it was a 30-30 of a 7mm super gizmo mag that hit it. It is a great caliber. Mine has a 4x Nikon Buckmasters scope, in which the optics are great but might be too pricey for your liking since you can' t use it there in IL.

Nothing wrong with your 30-30 bud! Far more accurate than a slug gun for sure. It' s not a field shooter, but back in the woods it will hold up it' s end as long as you hol up yours. I also would go with a nice low magnification variable as previously mentioned. Something in the 1.5-4 or 1.5-6 range will be awesome on that gun. Buy good scope mounts too and don' t get those crappy see shoot through mounts that seem to be popular on 30-30' s. With low magnification, you don' t need the iron sights anyway, and the see through mounts raise the scope too high for comfortable shooting...Jim

A lightweight, low power compact scope like a Leupold 2.5X with relatively long (+- 5" ) eye relief and a 20mm objective is perfect for guns like yours. 2.5X is PLENTY for ranges up to 200 yards, with any short-medium range cartridge like the .30-30. You want to keep your rifle light and handy, and putting an " astronomical observatory" type scope on it defeats its' design parameters!

And you don' t have to go to the expense of a Leupold to get such a scope, either. There are other brands which don' t cost nearly as much!
