Default 25-06 or .270?

Which of the two guns is better, takedown power and velocity? What model would you recommend? Any help appreciated.

The 270 Win beats the 25-06 Rem in pretty much every category. Just an all around better cartridge. As far as rifles I am partial to Savage and Ruger. Stay away from the Remington 710.

The 270 is a great caliber no doubt but i love my 25.06. This is just my opinion but i feel the only thing the 270 has on the 25.06 is you can load heavier bullets if you want to. I have different caliber guns for different task and although i wouldn' t recommend the 25.06 for your everyday Elk or Bear gun i wouldn' t be scared to shoot either with mine loaded with a premium bullet, but again thats just one persons opinion. If all your going to hunt is deer size game then i think it' s hard to beat the 25.06. The 270 will have a little more recoil but i don' t think it' s that big a difference if comparing a 25.06 with a 120grn bullet and a full house of powder. Another thing to consider is you can get ammo about anywhere for the 270 if you don' t handload so you may want to consider that before making your decision. I like Remington and Savage and don' t think you would go wrong with either with the exception of the 710, i' d stay away from that model.

For deer or similar sized game the 25-06 has plenty of power and therefore the 270 offers no real advantage. For larger game heavier bullets are an advantage, and while the 270 will work better than the 25-06 for larger game,I personally will not use any bore smaller than the 7mm' s for elk and moose.

I own and shoot both and I don' t think there is hardly any difference between the two. They both shoot light bullets fast and flat. The .25 is available in some varmint loads and the .270 does shoot heavier bullets. For antelope and deer I think the performance would the same. If you don' t reload go with the .270, ammo is lots easier to find. As for rifles, anything american made except that pos 710!
