Hi, i' m new here. What' s the deal with the winchester model 70 pre 64' ?

What' s the difference between the pre 64' and post 64' . I' ve heard people looking for pre 64' and can' t find em, so they go with a remington or something else. What makes the model 70 pre ' 64 so special, or, rather, different from the post ' 64' s?

Ok the pre-64 is a mauser style bolt action rifle with controlled feed ...3 position wing safety and cut checkered stock. It was pretty much well built for its time and very costly to produce as a result of that. It was replaced by the post 64 Model 70(economy measure) which was a push feed design but kept the 3 pos wing safety and had a cheaply made stock with impressed checkering..sales immediately plummeted and Remington got the lions share of the bolt market with its 700 which was introduced around that time period.s...after a couple of years of the post 64t they added a rail to the action to make it smoother and a little while after that realized they would sell more if they reverted back to the pre 64 design with some changes ..it is now CRF with a 3 position safety and handles a ruptured case better than the old design ever did...Its now made on CNC machines in lieu of the manual machining methods of old.

There' s a pre-' 64 that keeps popping up in the gun shops and pawn shops around town.

Last I saw, it was going for $800 or so.

I wouldn' t buy a pre-' 64 for that much, knowing that more than one person has been dissatisfied with it.

Mauser style bolt refers to the way the extractor is mounted on the bolt...it does however not have the third lug like the 98 mauser. If one showed up at my door begging to be bought I would and use it as a collector piece or as is for hunting. But just let me be a little opinionated for a second and Let me slip into my flame proof suit for a minute and say that I wouldn' t waste my time with one..The post 64 CRF is better except for the cheap extractor that Winchester puts on it...I much prefer the new Ruger 77 MK II action to either...smoother ...handles a case failure better and no extractor problems...lower priced and based on the model 70' s and M77' s i have owned a way better shooter...just my 10 dollars worth of opinions.
