Default Best option for a .308 bolt action Rifle

how the title says I'm looking for the best option for a .308 bolt action rifle for hunting.

Budget $700-1000 not including scope.

What type of hunting do you have in mind? A whitetail rifle for the Mid-Atlantic states might be a different rifle than a sheep rifle for the steep mountains, etc.

Your price range is a good one. There are many fine choices that will fit your budget.

If I was to buy another .308 today, it would probably be a Weatherby Vanguard or a Rem 700.

Like a I said on other post take a look at the ruger american. For the price you get a really nice rifle. Everyone I know who has one loves them. You can get them in all weather model, predator with a tapered barrel. My next rifle is going to be a American predator in 6.5 creedmoor. I have the American in 308 just haven't had a chance to shot it yet. The remington 700 and weatherby vanguard are also good rifles own multiplies of each.

Winchester Model 70, Remington Model 7 and Model 700, Ruger Hawkeye, Browning are all worth a look (that is where I would start). If none of them floats your boat, some guys love their Tikka, Savage, or Howa/Weatherby.

It is really hard to go wrong in that price range. Just handle a few and find one that fits you the best.

Most of the top manufacturers also offer a budget rifle (like the Ruger American) that are supposed to pretty darn good.

The ruger all weather is matte stainless and a black synthic stock. The predator is a green synthic stock with a heavy tapered reel in matte black finish. I have a remington model seven and love it it is in 7mm/08. My 8 year old nephew killed his first deer with it last year. In all honesty I like the 7mm/08 better then the 308. Have and old ruger m77 in 308. So I have both calibers. The gun shop I deal with said he sales and average of 1-2 ruger Americans a month and its not that big of a shop. Again not a big fan of the winchester, browning, or savage rifles but that just me.

The Ruger American would be a great choice and it would allow you to have a good chunk of change to spend on better glass!
