The new 300 Remington Ultra Magnum?
 

I think its the fact that Ive always wanted a flat shooting 30 calibur with a 180 gr. bullet. I almost bought a 300 Weterby Mag. The new Remington is a way bigger cartredge. Has anyone shot this beast and does it kick like a mule? For 500 bucks it seems to be a good deal, well except for the cost of the rounds lol.

I have two of them, A Remington Sendero and a SPS. It is a awesome round, the king of factory made 30 calibers. They are inherently accurate. AS far as kick, I dont think its all that bad, I have a 338 win mag, I cant tell the difference in the kick from it versus the kick of the 300 RUM. If you go and look at Chuck Hawkes recoil tables you will see that the 338 Win mag actually has a tad more recoil. In my opinion the 300 Ultra mag is the ONLY true 30 caliber mag out, that I would even concider buying. A 300 Win mag doesnt do much more than a hot loaded 30-06, and I wouldnt own a Weatherby, because you have to buy weatherby ammo or brass, and that costs a arm and a leg, and still doesnt hold a candle to the 300 RUM. The only factory built 30 caliber that is faster than the 300 RUM is the 7.82 Warbird, built by Lazzaroni, and the gun sells for $6000. For $500 buy it! Just my opinion. Make sur you put a quality set of rings and bases on it, last week I replaced the rings on my SPS, I had some aluminum Burris rings on it, they both cracked. Buy steel Leupold rings and bases.

Yes, recoil is rough, but managable. Getting 3350fps with 180gr pill is fairly easy with the typcial powders like RL22, RL25, and H1000.

It is rough on barrels. I went thru a few pounds of Retumbo, and for some reason it was rougher than most. I was shooting over 100gr of that powder.

Here's the link that Fritz was talking about.I have no experience with the round you're talking about so i can't comment on it. I have shot a 300 win mag,actually helped a guy site one in.Personally it's more recoil than i prefer.

Thankx for the feed back, all good info to me I mostly hunt archery but i do have a nice 30-06 browning a-bolt for the rifle seasons. If I bought a 300 RUM it would primaraly be used in the event of drawing a big horn tag.

I dont think anyone can go wrong with a 300rum , I have a rem LLS that will shoot one holers all day very accurate gun :action-smiley-099:

I shoot a 300 win mag and my friend has a 300 ultra mag that I've personally shoot a bunch at the range. While the Ultra mag has more velocity and more energy for practical hunting situations for most guys it's not worth the extra recoil and price tag on the ammo. But if your going to set it up tactically for 400-800 yards across canyon shots it's has it's place in the hunting world. But that's a lot of range time and information to have to learn to shoot those shots. I know of three bull elk that were found days later after shooting over 600 yards across canyon just last year. These men didn't even know they had hit the elk until the magpies and crows showed up where the elk finally died. Very sad very true.

My opinion is if you can't get it done at 500yards and under with a 270win, 30-06, 300win you probably don't have any business with a 300RUM at 500-800 yards. The cartridge isn't going to help you shoot better. Not trying to be too opinionated but I see this year after year with new clients bringing super mags and can't shoot them at all.

I'd like to share just one instance to prove my point that they are not made for everyone to use.
Had a guy show up with a Lazeroni .308 warbird which is even faster than the 300RUM. He could shoot a reasonable 1 1/2" group at a 100yards. So off we go elk hunting. We spot a bull elk on the mountain at 428 yards. His gun is set up all tactical and I just assumed he was going to set up and take that shot. I asked is something the matter when he didn't and he said I can't shoot that far we have to get closer. So off we go stalking up and around the bull because of terrain. Hour later and 5 shots we have a bull go down at 80yards from us. I asked him why he even brought that gun in the first place he said everyone at home told him it was what he needed to buy for elk. I have many stories just like this one and they could go on and on and on. I think you get my point.

I like the 300RUM I like shooting it. And I would like one set up for shooting across canyon at long distances. But it's not for everyone and for sure not for a typical hunting situation. I would considerate over gunned in a lot of peoples hands.

I agree with you Blackelk. What I like about the 300 ultra mag is this, it makes those 300 to 500 yard shots much easier. I'm not into the long range stuff but I'm starting to dabble a little. To me the 300 ultra mag is the best elk cartridge out there and I don't think I will ever go away from it again.

edit- I should add that to me 500 yards is long range and I have never attempted a shot on an animal that far. Not that I wouldn't take that shot, it just has never been necessary!!

Practice with the 06 and use it

I havnt seen the loadings for the 200gr. wildcat bullets, but you are compareing it to a 300 Rum with a regular hunting bullet, you can get better bullets for the 300 Rum which will out perform the STW at 500+ yards. Now for the average hunting bullet comparison, to be fair lets look at some similar bullets. The 7mm STW, shooting a 175gr. barnes X bullet drops 34.05" at 500 yards. Now we cant get a 175gr. bullet in the 300 RUM so we have to go with a 180 for a close comparison of the two. The 300 RUM shooting a 180gr. Barnes x bullet drops 30.09" at 500 yards. That is about 4" flatter shooting than the STW that you claim to be a flatter shooting gun.
