Default .38-40 Winchester and Whitetail Deer

Is the 38-40 round too light for whitetail deer when fired through
a model 92 carbine? What would the maximum effective range
be?

Thanks,
Boltaction

Well Bolt. I think its too light. Reason being that I used this cartridge once with and 1873 to harvest a whitetail doe. Oh yeah, I killed her alright but not with the first shot. I really don't know how many shots I took at her while on a dead run (first shot was standing) but she finally did stop after about 100 yard run, stand for a few seconds then fall over. And she wasn't overly big either. But my uncle commented that I "sounded like John Wayne down there shootin a bunch of indians".
I should have known it was too light a round when I could hear the bullets hitting the target at 50 yds when I sighted her in.
Oh BTW, this isn't the right forum to post this.

Worked years ago, deer haven't changed? Use .40 caliber pistol bullets in as it's really a .40 caliber not a .38 inspite of it's handle...............Harold

Keep shots inside of 50 yards and you should be ok with a well placed shot.

Load some Hornady 180grain XTP's or Speed Gold Dot 180's and I bet they would do a number on out to 100 yards. Maybe 150 if loaded hot.

180g Bullet moving at 1750 from a 24" Barrel.
