in the thick i use iron sights as well. Too hard to get a deer in the scope close range when you spook one. However this year i put XS sites on my 30.30. Its a peep site kind of like the williams but i liked the XS better.

Alot of guys in our hunting group use red dots. I have one on one of my guns but don't use it to much. They work thou, just have to make sure you site them in.

I have the XS ghost ring on my 307 and a receiver mounted Williams peep sight on my 7600. Those are my two thick brush guns.

I'd take a red dot over iron sights.

Had one sold it however, went for a 1.5-4.5x scope

jus need to find what the easiest thing fer you to focus on is..they have many style sights out there , and not everyone picks up on the same things. so head to cabella, gander or what ever ya got there and look at what they have, they will show ya what they got fer your set up and ya can look through em right there and see whats easier fer you.

I have a Marlin 336C in .35 Rem and I would NEVER consider putting a scope on it.

That's what it's for...................................thick cover, quick shots.

JP - A properly mounted scope is your best bet for quick target acquisition. You don't want one too high. Get the lowest height ring you can use. You never did say what power scope you have or what rifle.
I too hunt some pretty thick stuff and I put a 1.75 - 4X on my Marlin Guide Gun. Its actually a shogun scope with the circle/crosshair reticle. One the lowest setting, I can pick up game quicker than when I used both iron sights and a peep sight. If I am going to hunt more open areas, I will use another flatter shooting rifle with a 2 -7x or 3 - 9x scope.

Im not a big believer in quick shooting at running or spooked game ,too easy to botch the shot, I like to settle the Xhairs on the vitals and squeeze. That said, most deer Ive jumped have stopped for a second after running 50 yds or so. never had any problem getting them in my 3X scope in time for a good shot.

Whatever you decide on, you have just got to get comfortable with it through practice. Shoot free hand and practice pulling up, getting your target in the sights and squeezing the trigger.

I have the exact set up on my 336. The long eye relief with the circle/crosshair reticle is perfect. I am usually up a tree in our thick woods, and bacon wrapped back straps are as easy as putting that circle right behind the deer's shoulder and touching the trigger. I have considered open sights on the Marlin, but I find myself in the tree in our dark woods waiting for the sun to come up, and I need the scope for those early morning shots in the shadows. Most of the time, my style of hunting, and ranges of my shots would be considered bow hunting with a 30/30. I haven't missed a deer hunting this way since I was a teenager, but it probably has more to do with the fact that just about every shot I have taken I could have hit the deer throwing a rock at it.
If our woods were not so thick, and it allowed for slow still hunting on foot, I would probably just hunt with the factory open sights, or maybe use a peep sight.
