Default 264 or 308 HELP

So guys i'm lookin at gettin a really sweet flat shooting gun. i figured a 264 would be great i wanted to build it myself and so on. i was going to buy a lothar wother barrel and savage perction action w/ accu trigger and get a really nice laminate stock w/ thumhole. then my cousin told me that a 308 would do just fine and not to build it cuse it would cost to much. he said ammo is so hard to find and they are a really loud gun andto just get the 308. so iwas lookin and a found a savage accustock and accu trigger 308 for $599. so now i ask you guyswhat should i do. 1 should i risk building the 264 only to figure out a 308 will performjust as good as it and it would be cheaper to shoot. 2 will the 308 even compair to the 264 downrange. 3 and i was lookin at the browning x and a bolts. are they worth price over 1000. and last what brand gun do you recomend forsuperior accurace and dependability.

Savages are usually super accurate. There are many "production" type guns that are accurate out of the box. Check Tikkas, Remington 700's, Brownings and the new Winchester 70's. Get what feels best to you. The .308 is a good choice. Another ultra flat choice is the .257 Weatherby (except ammo costs are high). A Vanguard sub MOA would do the trick.

If you are referring to a 264 Win Mag, I'd say don't waste your time, ammo would be very expensive if you could find it. Not to mention the fact that it has the ballistics of a 270. If I were you I'd be looking at a 25-06 or a 260.

If you're looking at a deer rifle out to 300 yds thereare a ton of good options out there that will do the job.

The 7mm Rem Mag something that you might want to consider instead of a 264WM.

I have a few "less than popular" caliber rifles that I love but I would caution you against going that direction unless you reload. The 264 WM is not very popular and you might have trouble finding ammo that shoots well in your rifle.

If you want something flat along those lines...

.270 WSM or 7mm WSM

maybe a 6.5mm-284 if you reload, maybe not super flat, but super accurate, it's the 1000yd goto so it seems.

Get a .270wsm and top it with a zeiss with the z800 reticle. Zeiss also makes areticle for the .308 out to 1000yds I believe.

If you're considering the .308, how about the .260 or 7mm-08?

The 308 isgreat for a lot of purposesbut it's not the flattest shooting round available.

I don't know how far out would be shooting but IMO a "flat" shooting cartridge starts at 3000 fps and goes from there. Nothing based on the 308 case, except for the .243, qualifies as "flat shooting" with normal weight hunting bullets.

The 264 Win mag would certainly qualify as a flat shooting cartridge and one that would be a serious consideration being that you do reload ammo. But honestly I would take a hard look at the .243. It is a flat shooting cartridge, very light on recoil, Ammo is relatively inexpensive compared to other cartridges, easy to reload for, is chambered by every single gun manufacturer I know of, and will easily take down any deer alive.

The Browning X-bolts are very nice rifles and have some very nice and well thought out features. However, if you are going to have to pay $1000+ for one then you need to contact me and I can save you a couple hundred bucks.

Some great and accurate bolt rifles would be Tikka, Remington, Winchester, Browning, Savage, Sako just to name a few.

If you reload, and want the flat shooting High BC .264 bullets I'd get a savage action, just like you planned and have a barrel made in 6.5/06 or 6.5/06 AI, they'll get it done cheaper than the 264 WM, cases are cheap (if you want cheap ones) easy to find, and get a 28-30 barrel and they'll outrun the 264 WM.
The 308 is ok to around 900 yards but it takes alot of elevation adjustment to get it there. I regularly shoot berger .264's out to 1060 yards and they still hit with authority that far.
