Default .270? A versatile do everything gun?

I am shopping for a new rifle. I currently have a 30-06 so I have my entire dear and elk hunting covered but I recently sold my .223 and I"m looking to replace that small gun with something more versatile. I will be looking for something that I can shoot anything from coyote"s up to antelope and do a little more long range hunting and target shooting. Because of this I have began to lean towards a .270 Savage 110. My 30-06 is a tack driver at 200yds (1" groups or less) and I would like to get something as accurate or better. My priorities are performance, price, and versatility. I think a .243 would be too small for much of the uses I want and anything bigger like a 300 would be overkill. I"m just looking for more opinions and what people have success with currently.

I have looked at the 25-06 but what about the availability of ammo and versatility of it loads? I just have not spoken to many people who have used it.

i love my .25-06, it is my primary weapon. you can buy the ammo almost anywhere (wal-mart, bass pro, cabela's, gander mountain, any gun shop, etc.). you can buy the ammo from around 80 grains (maybe even lower) up to 120 grains. i use the Federal Premium 117 grains.

The 270 is to close to the -06 so look at the 25-06 or a 260.

.243 or 25-06. .243 with 85's or 100's would be perfect for yotes and goats and deer as well. 25-06 with 100-117 gr bullets for deer and goats.

I personally use 70 gr hp for yotes out of my .243 and 100 gr for deer. I use 100 and 117 gr sierra's out of my 25-308.

A 270 and 30-06 are so close in performance they are pretty much used on the same class of animals and are better suited forantelope to moose rather than varmints to antelope.

Why do you think that the .243 is too small for antelope?
For animalsin the varmint class to antelope and deer a .243 Winchesteris as perfect of a cartridge for this job as there is.

I have to agree. The 270 can do ALMOST as much as the 30-06. And being that you already have an '06 you may want to drop down a notch. And since you want something more than the 243 you still have a ton of choices. Some that will take care of your tasks include the 260 Rem, 7x57, 7-08, 257 Roberts, 6.8 Rem. I'm sure I missed a few. These are all available in short action rifles which are generally lighter than your '06 but still plenty for what you want.

Bigbulls is right.....!

If you are looking fora caliber to handle "EVERYTHING" up too and including deer, you can't do better then an .243.

No caliber can do everything, however some are considered dual or even triple threats.

There's a reason that the 06' has been around 103 years .

Nothing wrong with any of the 7mm's .7x57 is almost as common 06' and has about 6 or 7 factory loads from all of the big 3 and all sorts of bullet wieghts and types for the handloader .

The 243/6mm Remare good also and make fine varmiters .

I'm wanting a 257 Roberts myself .

The 270 is an excellent all around cartrige but is so close to the 06' that if you have an 06' or 3 there would be any
gain at all in getting 1 .
Well outside of the why yes I do have an O'Connor 270 .
