How about a three shot bolt action .410, with a full choke and high brass #4 shot?

I have a Sig double barrel in 410 and it works fine for squirrels, and lots of other game. But I had rather use my 22 LF on them.

It wouldn' t be a shotgun. It would be the single shot .22 I had as a kid, which I shot hundreds of squirrels with up at my uncle Gerhard' s and aunt Ing' s farm over many years. I could consitently shoot them from the leaning up on a tree from 50 yards away off the corn crib with the fine iron sites on it.

The biggest challenge was to keep the big Collie dog, " King" , in the house until I got the first shot off. He was a great squirrel hunting companion. He' d go around the other side of the big Oak trees the other grey and fox squirrels at the top would come around my side to get away from " King" . Bingo, there' s another one.

Sorry for getting off topic. I couldn' t resist thinking outloud about those good times.

I only take one gun hunting with me. It is my rugged, dependable Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag 12 guage, 28inch, all cammo shotgun. I have 4 different chokes, shoots all the way up to the 3.5inch super magnum loads and it makes it a very versatile shotgun. Including those squirrels high in the cypress trees, deep in the swamps of south Louisiana.

I would use a single shot NEF survivor in 410. Good range as you can also shoot .45 ammo in it. It has a hollow stock that you can put spare ammo or gloves or something in. You can shoot 410 slugs and not ruin a whole lot of meat and still shoot out to 50 yards. You can use 45 pistol bullets and shoot squirrels out as far as you can hit them. A VERY versitile gun made for lots of types of ammo. And at a great price too, less than a mossberg. And standard 410 #6 shot has always been my favorite for squirrel and rabbit.
