Just had a quick question I was hoping someone could answer. I have owned an 870 express combo for years and other than a weird misfire last year pheasant hunting (the gun fired but the wad and shot barely came out) I have loved this gun, have fired it several thousand times. When I bought the gun in the late 90's I decided to get the Combo so i would have a deer barrel in case I had teh oppurtunity to Shot Gun hunt for deer. Hoping that I have a place shot gun deer hunt this year, I was looking to get rid of my current barrel I got with the Combo and get a new barrel, one with the scope mount attached to the barrel.
Some of you may know that with the 870, the straddle scope mount attaches to the actual gun so if I want to go pheasant hunting with my 870, I screw up my sights when I go to slug hunt. My question is, I want to sell my 870 slug barrel without the scope mounts and buy one with the mount attached to the barrel. I have seen 2 different types out there, one by remington and one by mossberg. The one by Mossberg seems to be about $85 cheaper than the remington. I read some of the reviews on Cabelas and it seems like people like the mossberg as well as the Remington.
I was just wondering if anyone has any comments or ideas on which barrel to get. Im starting a new job at the moment so the extra cash would go towards my hunting this year. More important to me than the money is a clean kill on any deer. Ive killed many deer with my .270 and 2 open sight last year with my shotgun, but would like something a little more accurate than open sight. Any reviews or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

There's a fine line between deer hunting and sitting there looking stupid.
If you can gut a deer and drink a beer, you're a friend of mine.
Either one is good, the rifeling should be the same, somewhere around 1-34" or 1-36". If money isn't and issue then I would go with the Remington, it may just fit better, but you won't go wrong with the Mossberg. Make sure you get the cantilever rail mount
I have a Hastings cantilever on my 870 12 ga and it shoots just fine. For my son, I had gotten him a 20 ga combo, with the open sights, then put a saddle mount with a red dot on it. Of course, we then had the same problem you have in that it was time for pheasant season. So, I did the only logical thing, I bought another gun. But luckkily I stumbled on a great deal on G-Broker. If you already had the saddle mount, I'd say add a gun, but since you don't, I believe the Hastings and Mossberg barrels are every bit as functional as the true Remington Barrel.
I have a hastings on my rem 1100, with the canti mount. everytime you swap barrels though it would be a goodidea to sight in that slug barrel/scope again, most likely things will change.....or at least they have a good chance they will.
wad barely comes out? like 10-15feet maybe? that's fine......but if its stuck at the end of the barrel, id worry.
Thanks for the help guys! I'll probably starting looking for a barrel in the next month or so. Seems like everyone has a good experience with most of them. One last question. What do you think, 20 or 24 inch barrel? I know I will get added distance with the 24 inch barrel, but if Im shooting at an average of 100 yards is the 24 inch barrel necessary. It sounds like some of you have shot these barrels before and I just wanted to see what you think. The difference between the 20 and 24 inches in $100 so I didn't know if it was worth the extra money or an just an "overkill" on an already good barrel. Again, thanks for the input and I put a few links of the barrels I was looking at below. Good hunting!
I have a Badger Barrel for an 870.It has the Cantilever scope rail,3"chamber,1in26" twist(fast),special purpose finish,24".I shotmaybe 85 rounds though it.It's made for the high performace sabot slugs.I still have the box and ant paperwork that it came with.It was purchased from Badger last August(07).I just can't handle the magnum rounds anymore(rotator cuff surgery). It's so accurate,it's sickening. If you are interested,I'll sell it for $125.00...Bob
