.17 hmr works great for every little critter you want to shoot. There is a few different bullet styles out there, some for big expansion, some for penetration. I've even taken a couple of coyotes( head shots at 75-100yrds). As far as too expensive, It makes you shoot better. These guns when properly sighted in are incredible.
