I checked one out at Gander Mountain the other day and noticed that the action on it was not even close to the Rem 700 as far as smoothness and quality.

I looked at a couple of them at Walmart, they have them on closeout for $299. This was my first look at them and I wasn't that impressed. The bolt seemed klunky and no where near as smooth as my Win 70. The stock looked somewhat cool but seemed very slick, as in slippery, and did not feel secure in my hand. I think it needs some kind of rubber or checkered panels on the forearm to help with this. It did come up to the shoulder well and for me seemed to have the right height comb for scope use. I don't see that its any better and may be not as good as other guns in the lower price range that it fits into. I have not shot one so I can't comment on that so I will let others chime in on it's performance.

I was looking at it primarily for my son who wants a CF to go with his MLer. He is not a small boy (16yo 6'8" and 260 pounds) so I am looking at full size rifles. I will probably end up getting him a Savage, Weatherby, or Rem SPS but have also been looking at the Tikka and would like to check out a CZ but haven't found one to look at yet.

Q:Who's this kid going to play football for?
A: Anyone he wants to.

Any other ideas of guns in this price range to go take a look at. I am new to deer hunting and next year would like to head north where you can use a rifle

Here's what I would do if I were you. I would look high and low for a used Rem. 700. They shouldn't be too hard to find. For $400 you should be able to find a really nice one. The 700 and the 770 are two completely different guns. IMO, the 770 is about as cheap as it gets and the 700 is about as good as it gets. Simp

Simp,

Actually he plays basketball and loves it. The doctors tell us he may top out around 7' and since he is already wearing size 20 Nike's I have no reason to doubt them. Finding hunting boots for him is out of the question until he stops growing, then I may need a shoe sponser to help with the cost.

OMG! Hey, congratulations...I guess. You may have a hard time finding shoes and boots that can fit him but I'm sure some college would absolutely love to give him all he needs. Get the boy what he wants! He'll take care of you soon enough when the recruiters start making your phone ring off the hook!

Simp gave you some good advice. I would stay away from the 770 and its predecessor 710.
