Pros of the .300 RUM (Remington Ultra Magnum), are higher velocity and better ballistics at longer ranges.
Cons are, it kicks more than the .300 Win Mag, but now Remington has released a "Three Level" ammo thing, and you can get one grade of .300 RUM ammo, that has the power and kicks like the 30-06 Springfield, second level, it kicksandhasballisticslike the .300 Winchester Magnum, then, you have the third level, and it has .300 RUM ballistics, with higher recoil and higher velocities.
So you couldusethe different levels of performance ammoif the recoil would bother you, and no one on here would blame you if it did.
I own the 300 RUM. Some of these guys on here know how I feel about recoil. (I hate it) I put a muzzle break and a limb saver on mine and now it is pleasure to shoot. Kicks about like a 30.06. Whithout the breakI was timid to pull the trigger and it affected my shooting.

The 300 UM is truly awesome. It is made for the big boy's. Load it as hot as you feel safe. I load for three of them. The hotter we load them, the better they shoot. You bought a 300 UM for performance-so let the BIG DOG EAT. Who cares about barrel life or recoil. If you are concerned about that, then buy something else. We have been using RL 25,this powder has performed well. I just got a pound of Retumbo to try out, I do not know why(the RL25 is spectacular), but what the heck. Tom.

We need to stop using these terms today, "Sniper Rifle", "Tactical", "Assault Weapon".
One you can buy ammo for just about anywhere ,one you cannot. Really no difference in down range performance of game at ranges responsible hunters shoot. One has managable recoil without need to resort to bells and whistleswhile one doesn't.
One will be available commercially 20 years from now one will be the domain of reloaders only.

Only an unprepared hunter doesn't take enough ammunition on a hunt and runs out.

It depends on your definition of ranges responsible hunters shoot. That could vary from 50 yards to 500 yards depending on the hunters shooting skills and equipment.

That depends on your recoil tolerance. My own 300ultramags have no brakes or other "bells and whistles",yet I am able to comfortably shoot far better groups with them than the average hunter does with their 270s and 30-06s.

Only time will tell. While some of the ultramags are not selling well, the 300 has been quite popular.
This topic may have been already beaten to death, so I apologize if it has. What are the differences, pros cons?
Thanks
I have had 3 300RUM's. Burned the barrel out of one, and had another built, that had heat cracks after 500-600 rounds in the throat. I was sick and tired of the round. Once you finally find a few loads that you usually like, and spend spring playing doing some long range shooting fun, now its time to change the barrel.
I have since movedback to a 300 win mag. And a win mag is a potent little cartridge. I am getting 3150fps with a 180gr load. About 200fps away from my 300RUM's. Thats ok with me. I want a gun I can have for 4-5 years before replacing the barrel. I bet I get well over 2200 rounds out of this gun.
