I am in the market for a .45. I started out looking at 1911's and debating between brands. I the process I 've looked at a couple of the other options in 45 such as the Springfield XD. The guy at the gun counter (Cabelas) says that the XD will be more reliable with just about any ammo. It also has a 13+1 round magazine and fits quite well in my hand. I have never shot anything but a 1911, so I'm not sure what to expect.
XD's are good guns and so are Glocks. They are Reliable and do seem to feed more kinds of ammo better. The 13+1 Mag is just to make it look better. If you ever need it you will prob only fire 2 or 3 shots and it will all be over. They are nicer to carry because of the lighter weight. Im not a big fan of 1911's because of the singe stack mag they dont seem to fit ym hand right but i do like the double stack clones. If you do decide to get an XD get it in 40 S&W, It has plenty of power and less recoil and a little less cost for practice.

If you want a 1911 thats al ready to go from the box, I would suggest the Kimber Custom 2 with night sights. If you want a good quality reliable 45 ACP without breaking the bank, take a good look at the Ruger. NOTHING is more reliable than the Ruger of all the ones I tried. ( most all of them )
I have an XD 40 Tactial - and after a few years of abuse I can say that is had only had a few Failure to Feed (when my brothers gf was shooting it and limp wristing it), other than that it has performed flawlessly thru a few thousand rounds now. I installed a set of Trijicon night sights and a few other goodies and it shoots very nicely.
XD's, S&W M&P, Glocks are all great guns. I use to have a xd 40 anda glock 3540cal. I currently own a M&P 40. My M&P shoots unbelievably good groups and I've never had it not feed a shell. Out of the 3 plastic guns I've hadit has been my favorite. In the .45 I have a para ordinace. It is based on a 1911 action...grip is wider for a double stack clip, match grade barrel, hand tuneslide, etc etc... It will shoot 1" groups off a rest at 35yds. I've probably got 3000+ rounds through it and it's only hung up 3 times. If you are willing to spend a little moremoney I highly highly recommend them. I just got a Kimber Pro Covert II yesterday...even though I paid for it last week.urg that chaps me....I'm still breaking it in but so far it's a shooter. I wanted something that was a little smaller to carry at the campthan my para that has a 5" barrel. Kimber has a 4" bull barrel on a 1911 frame and action... I only shot it 35 times or so yesterday at 25yds I didn't have any outside a softball. That was all free hand shooting. These come out of Kimber's custom shop and they definitly did a good job. No play in any of it like you see with your standard springfield mil-grades. Get your check book out...I sold a couple of guns I haven't shot in a while to get this one.
For the money you can't beat the XD, Glock or M&P in my book. They are all great guns for the money. For a little more money look at the Para. If you want to break the bank check out your Kimber Custom Shop guns. Good luck
There are so many god handguns in the catagory you're looking at. Just pick the one that fits your hand and are comfortable with. Go with a Kimber if gun weight is a big thing for you in a c.c. weapon.
I can't tell you anything about a .45ACP SA XD, Glock, or S&W M&P. I can tell that I have shota fewPara-Ordnance and the HK USP, and they are sweeeeett! I own several 1911A1 models: a Remington Rand circa 1943 (lend-leased to Britian), a inexpensive Norinco (for $150 I couldn't pass it up), and my CCW a KimberSS Pro Carry. I easily have 5K plus rounds thru my Kimber and otherthan a couple of misfeed malfunction when it was still new and unbroken in, that was it for malfunctions. I cannot recall having any malfuntions in the last few thousand rounds. For a carry gun, I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything other than my Kimber PC.

1911's are great and so are the others mentioned.
I havea Glock21 in 45 that I trust with my life.
The newer slimline G21 fits me even better. May trade up.
Before you buy, check out the LDA trigger guns from Para.
Very sweet and light, with all the familiar features of a 1911, and a double stack mag.
Also, if you are interested in "combat Tupperware" take a peek at the Taurus 24/7 Tactical with the 5" barrel. It has 2 features that the Glock, XD, and the M&P lack: a 1911 style manual safety, and the ability to execute a second strike on a misfired round. It sounds good to me, but I'm waiting until it is more proven in the field.

1911. Kimber Sig, Para-ordinance, and Springfield all make high quality 1911s
The 1911 is the most customizable gun on the planet. There are so many aftermarket parts for them that Brownells has recently put out a seperate catalog just for 1911s. I personally have no interest in any other type of .45 auto, but that's just my opinion.
Springfield does make a .45 xd model that has the same frame size and dimensions as a 9mm. I think that's a fairly nifty package if you want the power of a .45 with the concealability of a 9mm.
