For deer and black bear, I would carry it. And I wander off deep in the woods, up close, where things sniff you and figure out if you are good to eat.

That is exactly what the 30-30 is good for. There are better guns out there in different situations, but for all around hunting a 30-30 levergun is hard to beat. Easy to carry, easy to aim and a quck second shot if needed. Whats not to like? Sure, it doenst have the range of a 30.06 or a 243, but then again those bolt action guns arent as easy to carry into the woods as a 94 30-30 is. There are about as many arguments against the 30-30 as there are for it, but one thing is for certain, the 30-30 has stood the test of time....

When the snow is coming down sideways and you want to get in the woods and track down some elk. 30-30 is still the go to gun. There are the 35's, 444, and 45-70 lever guns that will do just as well also. Definition of brush gun actually means short, open sighted, and capability to get of a quick shot. Never fear the 30-30's capability at short range.

I agree... The 30-30 is a timeless classic that has taken more deer than any other cartridge around. [8D]

Be advised though that since Winchester stopped making the model 94, the prices on used ones skyrocketed and won't come back down any time soon. Another option is to look at the Marlin 30-30's - which are a little stronger built than the Winchester, but don't have the same "vibe" factor as a true Winchester model 94.
