Default Looking for a .45

I am thinking about getting a .45 pistol and was wondering what you guys like and what barrel legths you use. I'm kinda new to pistols and this is the one that my grandpa never had in his collection.

Revolver or auto?
Alot of folks call an auto a pistol ,and a revolver a revolver,... but to me when someone says pistol, I automatically think of a revolver. They are what I grew up with.
Figure out which you want and narrowing the choice will be easier.
Myself, I'm partial to the revolvers. I have a Uberti Cattleman in 45 colt.
It has a 4 3/4 " barrel, but I've bought a 5 1/2" from
www.vtigunparts.com
and will have that put on shortly.
The cattleman is a replica of the 1873 Colt Single Action Army model, and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference in them side by side.

It depends on what style you are looking for. If I was just wanting a .45 and wanted a great and dependable semiauto , I would try to find something like a Colt Commander or another 1911 style Colt. If you are wanting something more modern, you can look into a Glock ( although I am not partial to them ) , or a H K USP, if you want a Polymer Gun. There are many more good ones, but thats where I would start looking. But be aware that goodpistols are not cheap.

man ain't that the truth. I think the most reasonably priced well made 1911 I've seen is the Springfield Armory models.

I have only owned 1 .45 and it was a Ruger P 90. Very reasonably priced, and man it was a shooter. I would recommend one, especiallyfor entry level handgunning.

IF you want 1911 style then a nice one is the Kimber line, less expensive would be Springfield Armory or Taurus has a new one out that we can't hardly keep in stock.
If you don't like the 1911 style a good "bang for the buck" is the new XD-45, can't hardly keep them in stock either.

I would say I'm mostly looking for a fun target shooting revolver. We used to shoot the .357 and .44 at my grandpa's once in awhile and I just want to start shooting again and collecting.

Do you want a revolver in 45 Long Colt or 45 ACP? There are numerous choices in the 45 Long Colt, but the only 45 ACP revolvers I know of are the Taurus Tracker, the S&W Super 625 and the Ruger Black Hawk Convertible which comeswith both 45 Long Colt and 45 ACP cylinders. I personally wouldn't own a Smith so the Taurus or Ruger would be my choice. If a 45 Long Colt,a Ruger would be my recommendation. Models are the Bisley, New Model Blackhawk and Vaquero.

Roger that, Dennis. The Vaquero would be my first choice. Ruger makes a strong gun. When theUberti came along, the asking price was right and the space in my gun cabinet was empty. I really enjoy the Cattleman. Easy shooting, fun to reload, and looks purty , too.
