There is nothing wrong at all with NEF, they make good little guns, and I have one in 45-70, and you can't hardly beat it for a nice little gun to carry around in the woods.

My cousin has a NEF 45/70...he loves it.
One of my life long friendshas ah+r 44mag he hasused it for as long as I can remember, for everything from treerats to black bear.
I have one in '06 I use as a beater gunalso a 12ga and.223 I keep leaned up behind the front door.
The only problems I have encountered is thatsome handloadsthat work fine in my Rem Model 7 and Savage 110swell up and get stuck...no problems with factory ammo except Hornady Custom which also sticks on occasion...alluminum shotgun shells do the same in my 12.ga now that I think about it...

Some have case sticking problems. However the rimmed cartridges like the 45-70, 44 Mag, 30-30 and 357 Mag, have very little trouble. I have several including the 45-70 and really like them.

Another good choice for a hog rifle would be the H&R in 444 Marlin. If you cannot find one, you could always get a 44 mag. and let me rechamber it for you. Hornady's new LeveRevolution ammo plus any good handload will offer you a better trajectory to your target over the 45/70's rainbow trajectory. Also, the accuracy of the 444 Marlin is usually much better than that of the 45/70. Most of the 444's that I have seen will shoot around an inch or less at 100 yards when fired from a bench. I have shot several hogs with a 444 Marlin in a T/C Contender and I can say that it speaks with much authority whenthat bulletcontacts a big hog!

Where did you hear that little bit about ammo prices going up? I know they've gone up quite a bit over the past year.

I have been hearing that too where I buy most of my guns. I heard the same thing last year, and it happened to come true. Something about steel prices keep going up. Dammed Chinese keep buying it up.
