The 17 HMR, is whatI would go with, because it is a little faster, and hits a little harder.

I currently have a CZ-452 American in the .17HMR caliber. Yes it's pretty accurate, but at longer ranges, the wind plays havoc with that little .17 grain bullet!! If I had to do it all over again, I'd go witha T/C .22 semi-auto. At ranges up to 50 yards away, it will place the bullets into one ragged hole. My cousin bought one the same time I got my .17HMR, and I'm constantly amazed at the groups that gun shoots!!
For a dedicated Squirrel/rabbit gun, it can't be beat!! Besides the shells cost much less as well.

How far are you looking to shoot? The HM2 is a great squirrel round, it does a bit less damage than the HMR does. It's pretty flat out to 100 yards. The HMR gives you bit more velocity and punch and shoots a little farther but tends to do more damage. If you are looking to eat what you shoot pick your shots carefully. A body shot to a squirrel will not leave much left to eat.

I am pretty sure the HM2 and HMR use the same bullets the difference is the HM2 is based on a .22 long rifle stinger round, and the HMR is based on a .22 mag round. I think shells are a bit cheaper for the HM2 as well.

I own a savage HMR and am very happy with it, but if I shoot a starling at 50 yards or so in the body it pretty much cuts the bird in half. I am using V-max bullets though which are designed to be destructive. They offer a few different bullet types now.

I have a SS Savage in HMR with a bull barrel. From 25 to 100 yrds it is right on. I shot dime sized groups at 100 yrds no problem. At 25 yrds we were shooting old 9mm casings one after the other no problem. At the gun range there was a piece of kite string tied between two posts at 25 yrds. I told my son to see if he could hitit. First shot the string fell in two pieces. Itis the most accurate gun I own. I'm using the 20gr game point from CCI. The only bad thing is shells are $10 for 50. The HM2 the shells are about $5 for 50.
