The above pictured gun is an H&R that I built for a customer a couple weeks ago and he finally e-mailed me with a couple of targets that he shot over the weekend...

The barrel I put on this particular H&R is a Green Mountain bull barrel that measures 1.062" in diameter and is 20" in length. I chambered it to the 17 HMR with a tighter than normal MATCH chamber. The trigger has been reworked to a clean breaking 20 ounces and the forend has been pillar bedded. This is basically a reworked stock factory gun with the addition of a new barrel...

The targets in the second photo were shot at 125 yards. Ammo used was both Federal and Hornady....

The 5/8" group at the upper left hand corner of the target is 8-shots at 125 yards....

Its a very accurate little round. I have a bare bones stock Savage 93/17 with the bull barrel. I put a Leupold 6x scope on it (it needs more power honestly) and did some ammo testing. Worst group it gave me (5 shot) was .9" at 100 yards CTC. Best group was right at .3" CTC.

Last week I pulled an old Redfield off a rifle I didn't use much and cranked up the power to 9. Now that I could see what I was shooting at, I started shooting the spent primers out of empty shotgun shell hulls. Its an amazing little set up.

Me personally, except for test firing a customers gun after it is built, I have never set down at the bench with any of the "little" .17 caliber rimfire rounds. I have built a couple of the 17 Ackley Hornets off the H&R that were just like the rifle pictured above and they would very easily shoot 1/4" 5-shot groups from the bench at 100 yards. Since I handload everything that I shoot, if I were to ever own a .17 caliber, it would have to be the 17 Ackley Hornet....

I have always been a fan of the .17s. I was just about to break down and get a .17 Mach IV barrel for my Encore when Remington announced they were going to "legitimize" the round as the .17 Rem Fireball. Can't wait for this one. Ought to be a real screamer.

Mr. White:

I totally agree with you on the .17 Ackley Hornet. With this little round , a 25 grain bullet, and 11.5 grains of 4227you can get3500 fps.My .17 BSA Martini in .17 Hornet is on long term loan to a friend whobusts coyotes with it.

alsagr,

have you shot any of the lighter weight bullets in your 17 Hornet? If so, what kind of velocity / accuracy did you get with them?

If the dies were not so expensive, I believe the 17 Ackley Hornet would probably be one of the more popular .17 calibers out there. In the T/C Contender, I get alot of them in to rechamber from the 17 M2 to the 17 HMR and a few of the guys that do have the 17 HMR are going with the 17 Ackley Hornet...

With some of the new 17 to 19 grain bullets, I have seen a couple of 26" and 27" barrels that would push these bullets very near the 4,000 fps. mark in the 17 Ackley Hornet chamberings....
