338 Federal

Anybody actually own/shoot a 338 Federal?

Considering ammo is 40$ a box and the gun 1200$, I don't like the 338 Federal.

The prices will come down as more gun makers get into the race. This is a very good and extremely efficient cartridge which offers good performance from a small package with minimum recoil. I can seee this one taking off pretty good. Cheap and easy gun to build.

Is it chambered by anyone other than Sako and Tikka? The MSRP on the Tikka T3 Hunter is $700, so I suspect you can get one for around $550-600.

I look for the Encore to have this barrel before long as well.

So is this a necked up 308? I am struggling to see what advantage it would have over a 338 win mag.

It would have no advantage to the bigger is always better crowd. However for somebody that wants a short Non Magnum cartridge with moderate recoil that will take NA game out to 300 yards, its just what the doctor ordered. Its in the class with the 35 Whelen, 350 Rem Mag, 338-06 and 358 Win.

I am sympathetic after 2 shoulder sugeries. Just not sure it has anything to offer over the 358 Win if we are looking for moderate recoil plus more frontal area. Guess we will watch sales.

The only real gain over the 358 is the bullets in 338 have better SD thus a bit better trajectory. I think sales will be good in areas where brush hunting and Moose and Bear hunting is popular. Do we need another caliber to fill this nich? probably not but more options are never a bad thing.:D

The only cure for my shoulder is joint replacement. Not sure if this old body is worth the effort.:(

It doesn't do anything a .308 doesn't do. .308 does a few things better as well. but we had this discussion.
