I would have to pick the 30.06 just because of its versitilty. From what I have learnedby reading a few books onshooting, the 30.06 is also a more efficent round. I can load my .06 for any shooting situation. Light for my 9 year old son to shoot at the range and shoulder breakers for me during hunting season. Just my $.02.

RE: .30-06 vs. .338 win mag vs. 300 win mag
well i a 30-06 is a great shooting gun after all it's been around forever if it wasn't anygood then why would they still be producing it. however i think the 338 might edge it. the 338 is just a supieor shooting gun. they are as flat as any and have enough knock down. however ammo is cheaper for a 06. and as for a 300 i think it's not as good as the other 2 i just like the 338 in general i have owned a few and they are a great gun. but if you want a long range gun that i fell in love with that would can all that you mentioned look at a .264 win mag. that is a sweet shootin gun just my opinion

I started with a .300 WSM that I got a great deal on. My buddy couldn't take the recoil and I could. I really enjoy this gun and found that if I will ever make it out west, it will come with me.
Now that I have stated that, now about the little jewel I picked up for a song at a Friends of the NRA Banquet. It is a Kimber 84m in .338 Federal. If it was a woman I would... but I dygress. I am now having a love affair with this gun and caliber. It is a light gun, but it has a hell of a bullet to throw out there. Recoil is very acceptable and I can shoot it all day. I am in the process of working up loads for 200 and 225 gr. bullets.
I don't understand why no one has brought up this fine caliber from Federal???
