If i shoot over 200 yards, I want a 270win.

I limit my shots with 308 to 200 yards on deer. On varmits, I would go higher. But I shoot 165gr bullets

If the expense of the caliber is a major consideration get the .308. Probably the best (or as good) of selection in ammunition you're gonna find...and you can get everything from military surplus to premium match grade. The 270 is a fine fine caliber but you wont have the selection or economic perk.

I've shot both of them and either one will be excellent. As far as a .308 not being good for long distance alot of benchrest shooters use a .308. I've shot a hog in the neck at 200 yards with ours. We also used to shoot beer cans at 400 yards with our AR-15.

We have 6.5 swede fans here at huntingnet!? Awesome, this is one of my dream calibers (and goes on my "some day" list for sure). Handloads, european ammo? and do you use an old mauser or a newer rifle?

http://www.savagearms.com/16fhss.htm

check this out!!! this will be my next longgunpurchase. Savage 16fhss with accutrigger. Available in 243, 7mm-08 (which is a necked down 308win) and 308 win. Any of those 3 calibers would be nice. Personally for the situations you gave I would go with the 7mm-08. Nice flat shooting gun with light bullets available for varmits and medium weights for antelope. Of course the same (bullet availability) can be said for the 308. hope this helps.

Soil I shoot the Fed. 140gr SP and I used Norma 156gr "Alaska" in Canada when I took the moose in 1995.I'm shooting a Ruger M77.

Mossy, so is the 6.5mm and it has better penetration than the 7mm-08.
