We bought dad a .25-06 5 or 6 years ago and he has taken several deer and an antelope with it. It's a nice flat shooting gun. He shoots 120 grain remington core-lokt bullets in it and it has never failed to put down a deer. He used a .30-30 for years before we bought this one for him, but he consistently had to pass bucks over 150 yards. Now, 150 yards is a chip shot! We went with a remington model 7600 for him, mostly because he's a remington man, but ruger makes a fine rifle. I'd say the only drawback to this caliber would be that you'd really need to think twice before attempting to take anything larger than a deer. So if elk or bear would be a possibility in the future, I'd elect to go with at least a .270 or my favorite, the old .30-06.
One other drawback, .25-06 is a
somewhat unusual caliber. Ammo is a little higher, and won't be at just any store you stop at. .270 or .30-06 is very common.
