Default Savage 110, 30-06. Can't make it shoot.

I'm posting this problem for a young man that's a friend of my son.

He was given a new Savage Mod. 110, approximately 20 yrs ago. It is in 30-06. He told me he has never been able to make it shoot consistently, and could not hunt with it all these years. During this time he has tried everything.

It came with a would stock and wouldn't shoot accurately. He had the barrel floated, nothing changed. Went to a synthetic stock, same problem. He has tried numerous factory loads and name brands, as well as handloads. He has replaced the scope and rings several times and name brands. The scopes have been shimed, etc. The rifleing is good. This gun will shoot all over a target.

I tried emailing Savage for suggestions and they will not accept emails. Do any of you have any suggestions, short of throwing it in the trash.

Thank You,
dog1

im no gun smith but it sounds to me that the gun has some rifling or barrel problems.a miss placed rifling could make the bullet spiral to unknown areas such as u said if it was a swell in the barrel it would lodge the bullet or blow up the barrel. from wat i can tell in your post it sounds like there is some sort of a defect in the rifling in the barrell swaping and changing everything like the youngman did means that its none of thoose. the rifling might be fine but it might be that they accidentally put to few or to many rifled grooves in ur barrel. plus a stock and other accesories like that really dont have a large impact on accuracy. id have the barrell cheked by a good gunsmith, if they stil say its not that then have it boresighted and set into a gun vice at a range and put a box of rounds through it start at 25, 50,100. but id try shooting it out of a vice that would cut down the shaking big time and should make a difference if its not anything else.

How is the crown of the muzzle? If it's dinged or out of round it would cause accuracy to be nil. It doesn't take much to mess up the crown of a rifle, even cleaning from the muzzle without a cleaning rod guide/muzzle protector is enough to mess up the crown and destroy accuracy. Since the rifle is 20 years old I doubt that Savage will do any warranty work on it, but I would take it to a gunsmith and have him go over it completely. If the only problem is the crown, it shouldn't cost much to fix.

Good luck,

Mike

Well, I own three Savage rifles, and all three of them are the most accurate, out of the box factory rifles that I've ever owned (and I've owned a pile of long arms over the years.) I own a 110 in '06 and it is, with the proper reload, the most accurate centerfire rifle I've ever owned. I would say that the rifle you are talking about has some problems that the other fellas here suggested. Something is definitely amiss!

About all that is left to check are the crown, bore, and chamber. Sounds silly, but are you ABSOLUTLY certain it is still a .30/06? I've seen rifles from time to time that were rechambered and never remarked as to caliber. Has the headspace been checked? Excessive headspace can cause inconsistant ignition. As posted above, how does the crown look? Any nicks or burrs? Have a gunsmith check it out. He can make a chamber cast to see if it is indeed a .30/06, he can check the headspace and the muzzle crown.

Don't throw it away, Savages are pretty easy to rebarrel, and shouldn't be terrible expensive to do so.

Thanks for the input, I'll print out your replys and give it to him. Hopefully a gunsmith can help him. I also have a newer Savage 110, probably 5 yrs old in 243. I handload for it and I can honestly say, if I could hold it still, it is a tack driver.

I gave a copy of each of your comments to the young man I talked about and his rifle. I also gave him the name and address of a reputable gunsmith. He is taking the rifle in to have it checked out and corrected, if possible.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and advice.

Off the top of my head,i would double check the mounts, rings, and actiion screws. Then check the crown, and have the wooden stock(orginal) glass bedded. I bet it will work. vangunsmith
