Default REMINGTON 11-87

I ran across a Remington 11-87 20ga. 26" Premier @ a Walmart - marked down to $500 because it's been in the store since 2002. Sounds like a good deal to me. Main use would be dove hunting. Anybody had any experience worth sharing - pro or con - with this gun?

I have 2 , 12 gau 11-87's
Great gun.

Just keep the carbon build up off the mag tube.
I use a Scotch brite pad and a little spray oil to remove the carbon and then wipe it clean , NO OIL on the mag tube.

Other than that just keep it clean and you will love it.

Three of my freinds had them all in 12 gauge 3" models. Two of them had several broken parts. The thrid one never broke any parts. All of them jammed often, even when clean. Noneof them are around any longer as they have been replaced by other models. It's a design that won't go long between cleanings. The newer models have poor quality for a gun in their price range. They are also one of the heaviest if not the heaviest in their class. They have way to much of that weight at the barrel for my liking. Manypeoplelike them and have not had issues. It's not the experince my friends had.

The 11-87's have earned a reputation for being unreliable in the area where I hunt. The berretta 390 and 391 are the favorite semi autos here.

I've had just the opposite experience. I've found the Rem 11-87 to be a real workhorse. There's lots of guys at our club shooting them and aside from the rubber gas rings, I've never seen a failure. I've put several hundred rounds per week thru mine and literally shot thousands of rounds without cleaning, and it continued to function flawlessly. I even had a running joke contest with a team-mate to see who could go the longest without cleaning our 11-87's. Finally blew a rubber gas ring due to the amount of fouling, and the dang thing still kept shooting with just an occasional hickup. That was after months of shooting. I'd highly recommend them with all the good experience I've had with them.

I have always heard reliablility claimes or lack of on the internet for years. So I had 1187 and got it at a dandy price. It never missed a beat. And once again found that internet rumors are to be taken with a grain of salt. I can't believe I did it, but traded it for a gold. I am happy with the gold but after I made the deal, I was thinking, why would I trade a proven weapon with well over 500 rounds or much more for an unproven weapon because it cost more.

Well see thiswinter if I made a mistake.

Are you saying you have 4,358 grains of salt here bigcountry? I can say that my freinds bad experinces with their 11-87's were no rumors.
You can't be serious about the Browning Gold being an unproven design. This model has won more NSCA events and championships in the last few years than any other semi auto. It went one and two in this years US open.

Here are a couple more rumors.

I have taken in 3 11-87's that were labled as junk by the owners.
1 just needed the return spring cleaned and oiled , it had some junk in it .
1 needed the return spring replaced ,due to the fact it was all rust .
I later learned the guy had droped it in the water and wiped it off and left it in his truck for 2 weeks.
The third had3 bent part in side .I can only think of 1 way they were bent and that was abuse.

I later sold all 3 for a big profit

I have seen several problem guns that had the the piston and piston seal reversed.

I do know of 1 11-87 Super mag that was replaced because Remington could not fix it.

If you buy a gun and have problems ,SEND IT IN TO THE FACTORY to be fixed .
Don't cry and complain ,say what a peice of junk .
Or take it to a gunshop that is going to charge you , when lots of then don't know their @ss form a hole in the ground.

The gun shop I used to work at got in a equile number of all brands .
We would charge the guy to send it in to the factory ,something they were able to do then selves.

Worc. I like the gold I have. I just had a 1187 that worked flawlessly and traded it to a guy even. I was very leary of the trade. I mean, wouldn't you be skeptical if a guy wanted that trade? I got the gold in Feb, and never have got to take it out duck hunting yet. I took it out and shot it to test functionality and it worked. He said he was trading cause he shot a 1187 better. Well see this winter on the Bay in salt water and 20 degrees. Duck hunting in severe wet conditions is much more a test than competitions IMO. I am sure it should work good, just the circumstances around the trade. A 800 dollar shotgun to a 500 dollar shotgun.

Sounds like you got the better part of the deal BC. I've had two 3 1/2" Golds that have been perfect. The other two Golds in my group have been also. My first one had around 5,000 rounds with out any malfunctions. I sold it to a guy that offered me a good price. I replaced it with the same model, only the new one has Dura-Touch. It's my waterfowling gun and sees some harsh conditions here in Michigan. It's pretty common to see temps below zero during the waterfowling season. Most times when a gun has cycling issues in the cold it's from using the wrong oil ortoo much.
