I make my own strings and cables, both endless loops and Flemish strings, so I'm more than shocked at some of the prices for some customs; $70-90 for a set of cables and string is way too much. Factory stings are generally pretty good now-for brand name bows. Since string weight is directly related to arrow speed, you're unlikely to gain much speed unless the string is on the light side (fewer strands) which can be a safety issue. Even then it's only likely to get you 5-7 fps faster. How long they last is largely determined by how well they are taken care of and if your bow/arrows have any sharp edges to cause abrasion. Serving wear is largely a function of the type of material used, how tightly it's applied and how the deck is lubed. I think that factory strings are very serviceable, and you're not likely to get a big increase in performance going custom. However, if you're into Flemish strings, those made by Boo are a true work of art.
