Default new to crossbows

I just picked up a crossbow to shoot for kicks in the back yard. I normaly shoot a compound bow
I got a barnett 300 , 2extra strings , wax, a dozen bolts with points, and a huge round target that was only used a few times for a 125$ .The first shot was ok but others were inconsistant. I can shoot my compound way more accurate than i could this crossbow .As i was trying to sight it in it occurred to me that maybe it needs to be tuned. I know how to tune a bow but not sure about a cross bow. Anyadvice would be helpful

I once had a Quad 300. Hated the way it felt at my shoulder. At least your price was good!

Anyway...while most crossbows do not need any adjustment and really aren't "made" to be adjustable, you can check the tiller the same way you would check a verticle bow. If that is good....

One thing new to crossbow people need to know is that the operation of cocking the crossbow is fairly critical to accuracy.
The string MUST be centered in the bow. That is, when at rest, if it isn't marked now, with a felt pen..mark the string right next to the arrow track..on both sides.
Then when you cock the bow...these two marks need to STILL centered as best you can by the track.

The easiest thing to do is buy a rope cocker. These make properly cocking a crossbow pretty easy...and aren't expensive.

If you still suspect anything might be wrong with the bow, call Barnett. They are pretty easy to work with. If that bow still has the Teardrop style cables, they MIGHT be able to upgrade it to the Yoke type cables...which are better on the bow and make the bow slightly faster.

As in all endeavors of life, you get what it cost you.

I think that might be the problem. i wasn't aware that cocking it that the string needs to be in the middle was important .

years ago i had a barnett and had the same problem. just take some white paint and mark the center string or a mark on each side of the rail. if you pull the string back a little uneven it will lock offset and it wont throw bolts accurate at all.my barnett was fun but would never hunt with it.
