Default Excalibur STS any good?

I've got a new Exocet coming and wondering about the STS system... seems like a good concept. Anyone try it?
If the bolt gets there faster than the deer hears it, is it really needed? I'd like to hear your opinions... thanks guys. Jeff in Ohio

My vixen has no sound attenuation whatsoever, and even though my bolts only go about 270 fps, I don't worry about it.

Not to side track your post, but you were the one that shared info on planting turnips right? Just curious on how they are doing. Or how the deer are doing with them.

Here's a link. As you will see, this guy is the king of the Excal tweakers, lol. I believe he sells his system, and for those who care about noise and have tried it, it gets good reviews. http://www.cacciaebalestra.altervista.org/INGLESE/Main0.html

I did not reconize the STS name. Is this the system that has the dampners mounted on the backsiude of the string to stop the viberation. IF it is, I have heard of one such model that did work, but only for a short while. The pads actually wore though quite quickly and then caused more noise then if it was not even there. I was told that it was even tested by a sound measuring device. It did work very well at the beginning.

Most people know how I feel on this, making your bow quieter. Even if you can make the bow totally quiet, the arrow is still loud in flight. It is actually louder then the bow being shot, so I would not give up speed of the arrow to quiet the bow. Just my opinion.

Tom, Matthias's gizmo supposedly doesn't affect fps. He has two versions, one has arms sticking out like the new Horton recurves and then the main bumpers by rail, the other is just the bumpers by rail, but did look like he glued something to the inside of limbs, which HAS to cost a few fps, lol. I think the 600 gr arrows have alot to do w/ it!!

I do not know about the ones you posted your link for or how long they will last. I do remember that a few years ago a member on the Excalibur forum made something like that which I believe bolted to the riser and faced the string, close the the rail. Yes it did quiet the bow without cost of FPS because it only contacted the string after the arrow was released. But I remember Bill Troubridge saying that he was very interested in it, but after testing it, it wore out very fast and then was actually causing more noise then if you did not have it in use.

I believe that on regular bows (70 lbs or so) that they will work great and last longer but with crossbows (150- 225 lbs), the force and power eat the dampners (pads) like in the test that Bill did. But untill crossbows become very prominit and alot more of them, the companies that make these things will just not develop then for crossbows, just not enough demand to get their investment back. I sure hope that the two in the link you provided work and last as it would give us shooters more things to tinker with (like we actually need it LOL ). But mnore options are better.

The trouble is getting the pads stiff enough to last with the force of the crossbow, but still soft enough to absorb the viberation in the string. I do not know what are used in the link you provided, but the one tested by Bill, I believe was just the normal compound pads. It might be worth a try to test them, either the STS system or thw link above, but me personally, I will wait untill it is well proven to work and last.

Yeah, you hit that nail on the head!! Seems like Horton found that out the hard way on their new recurves. Remember the trouble scpatterson had w/ his? Pads ate the string!! Then when they don't eat the string [softer compound??] they fly off the arms. They may have solved that problem by now, but it had been going on since the ATA show last January. I'm also of the opinion that if something worked well Bill T would be on it like a chicken on a june bug. I tend to think too much which gets me in trouble some, lol, but I recall him getting close to 250 fps w/ 900 gr arrow out of an Emax on his elephant. I tend to think [look out] that if a guy was a quiet fanatic, one of Boo's Excel strings w/ served cat whiskers and about a 500 gr arrow w/ 2" Blazers and a good mechanical would be about as quiet as you can get both in bow noise and arrow flight. Just a hunch.

I took some noise out of my excal by placing a Sims vibration dampener on the inside of each limb at the end where it will just touch the string when strung.
