I got a new Phoenix yesterday. If you didn't see my other post about how well it shot, in short I shot arobinhood at 20 yards freehand while still at the dealer's setting the xbow up. Anyway, the string isn't exactly flemish (at least not the flemish that I'm used to as a longbow shooter). How do you shorten the strings that aren't flemish (I've taken about 30 shots)? I've tried untwisting and it doesn't move. Currently the xbow is braced so that the string is linedup with the second line on the deck. Is this okay? What will I gain from getting the brace height closer to the first line? Did I mention that this is an awesome weapon?!!
Congratulations on you're new bow. You handle all the strings the same, just twist to shorten. Anywhere between the lines is good but if you are want to be like some people here wait until the string stops stretching and then experiment with different positions between the lines. Some where between the two lines will yeild the most accuracy. I usually try to get it real close to the forward line to give me the lowest brace height. Donno if there is a difference in speed if you give it the min brace height but I can only imagine you do get a tiny bit of speed from a low brace height.

I think it is the excel string that comes with the bow. It is definitely endless loop. With that in mind, am I correct in assuming that you won't gain much by trying to "untwist" them? Am I also correct in assuming that you can't "untwist" these strings so much that they will come apart like a flemish string where the twists are what actually hold the string together? Thanks.
You twist them to shorten the string and and increase the brace height. You will not damage anything by untwisting. Just stay between the lines. The flemish string looks like Mathew's Zebra string, also made of two strings of different colours.

Congrats on the Phoenix, I have 3 Excals but that's my "go to" bow. I'm using the same Excal string and have gone from 357 gr. stock Excal GT's to brass inserts for 431 gr. The Excel costs a few fps that you don't need anyhow, lol, and you can figure 1 fps for every 5 gr in increased arrow weight. Rumor has it that most Excals do their best when the brace height is set at 1 1/4" above where the rail meets the riser. One of advantage of the Excel is that it doesn't stretch much. You already got good advice on twists. Good Luck!!
Horray Horray u have gotten the best, so now u can rest! Congrats all info given prior to my post is good stuff by couple of great Excal folks, so enjoy shooting it!
DNK,being in Ontario,do you think the phoenix is fast enough for moose at 30 yards and any idea on the K.E ?

Dnk is busy w/ Squillkilla's family tree, but until he checks in, Bill T. co-owner of Excal took at least two moose w/ a Vixen. I'm confident enough in mine to bear hunt w/ I'm leaving my Emax sit at home. My range on bear is 17 yds. Good Luck!

I don't hunt moose in Ontario but I would have no problems wacking a moose with my Vixen using cut on contact BHs. I'd probably feel more comfortable at a closer range but with a good blade like Magnus Stingers you'd get deep enough. Don't expect a pass-through. Of course a Phoenix is a bit more in the power department. Would I take a shot at 30 yards.... its border line but I think when the moment of truth came I would say no, at 20 yards and only if the perfect shot presented itself. But you never know!
