Default Scottish Meat Pies

There' s a Scottish store I visit 2-3 times a year, they sell whats called a Scottish Meat Pie. Its about 2-3 inches in diameter, about 1- 1 1/2 inches high and has a top and bottom crust. Sorta like a Hockey puck. And filled with ground meat and spices. Does anyone out there know how to make these. There taste something like a Brady, I believe.

hi sorry i didn' t see this topic earlier .christine e-mailed me
thanks christine
i found a recipe on the web that i hope will work for you, not to fond of them myself they' re traditionally made with mutton and are very popular at soccer games here.
if the recipe doesn;t work for you let me know and i;ll try to find another
ps you may have to adjust the weights and measures a little as i think ours differ from yours slightly.
heres the recipe.

Mutton Pie

Hot water crust
Ingedients : 8 oz flour; 2 oz lard or vegetable fat; 2 fl oz milk; 2 fl oz water; pinch salt; 1 egg yolk

Filling
Ingredients : 12 oz lean mutton or lamb; 6 tablespoons meat stock, gravy or water; salt and pepper

Make the filling first. Chop the meat finely and season. Set aside. Set oven to 375 deg F or Mark 5. Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl. Boil the lard, water and milk together in a saucepan. Make a well in the flour and pour in the hot mixture: mix well with a knife and knead until smooth. Roll out two thirds of the paste on a floured surface, keeping a third for lids. Cut into 6 circles and press into deep patty tins. Spoon the meat into each tin, moistening each filling with a spoonful of stock, gravy or water. Cut the remaining dough into 6 smaller circles for lids. Brush the edges with water and seal. Make a split in each pie lid to allow steam to escape. Brush with egg yolk. Cook for 30-40 minutes. Serve hot or cold

Seems like a few diffent cultures have diffent meat pie versions. ( use to stop at this place in Ny after work every day for a portarican meat pie.

perdoggys only have sourkrut& potatoes & cheese etc.. i never had any homemade ones with meat anyways lol.

How come they dont just call haggis scotish meatloaf?

hi again
a site suggested a pinch of nutmeg or mace should be added to season the pies.
i;ll have a look around and see what other sites say.
a brady(not sure if you have a different name for them, we call them bridies)
is a bit like a pasty , its a filling similar to the filling in the meat pies, in a semi circular piece of flaky pastry finely chopped onions are also added to the meat though.
they' re rather good

If you like those meat pies you should try a Natchitoches Meat Pie. Here' s a pretty good recipe for them http://www.recipecottage.com/pies-sa...eatpies09.html
