Default Dried Beans

How do ya'll get dried beans to soften up when you cook them. I'm making soup with them and they have been on for five hours and are still hard. Thanks. Capt Brad.

Pinto beans are my specialty. Wash and soak overnight, turn burner on high and bring to a heavy boil, shut off burner and cover with tight fitting lid for an hour. Turn back on and simmer, putting plenty of salt & pepper, and salt pork or ham bone. Stir a lot while simmering...gives you better juice.
(There is a brand of pinto beans I get at WalMart called CASSEROLE pinto beans...they are the best.)

I was using small white beans. I soaked them first (only one hour). Then cooked for six hrs. They were still hard. Not to hard to eat, but not soft. I turned them off and in about four hrs. cooked again for four hrs. Still not soft. Then this mourning I cooked again for two hrs. Me and Gus ate them for breakfast but they never did get soft. Next time I'll use canned beans. Good Luck. Capt Brad.

Capt Brad, Sounds like you were using Navy Beans. Soak them overnight the next time, drain the water, cover to top again with water, and then cook. See if that helps some. Cook on a low to medium setting as beans can scorch easily. Navy Beans are usually firmer than others. Another Great White Bean to try is the large Lima's. They cook somewhat quickly.

A general bean tip...drain the water they soaked in and certain atmospheric disturbances will be lessened in severity for many folks.

The way I cook them if I'm in a hurry is cover with water and boil for two or three minutes .shut them off and let cool for a hour ,then drain and put on fresh water and boil for a couple hours . That has always worked fine for me .

I boil them for 1 hour then cook in a crockpot for 6-8 hours on low.

Make sure you don't add salt until after the beans are soft. Salt makes the beans even harder and it will take days to cook.
