Default Fawn Bleat call

This is my second year bow hunting in Georgia (unsuccessfull), and would like some feedback about early season calls. I have tried the fawn bleat (distress) call numerous times, but never had any luck with it. The directions say it should sound like a baby crying, but maybe I am doing it too long, or not long enough.. any tips would help.
I usually hunt from the ground on public land. Since I have not had a lot of time to scout this year, I am doing a lot of still hunting/scouting. So far have only scared up a doe. It snorted and ran about 50 yards then stopped. I blew a doe grunt and it seemed to relax and come out and look in my direction. If I had a rifle it would have been mine!
Anyway, until the rut is here I am mostly concentrating on does. Muzzleloader season is in a couple of weeks, and by then I should have my spots picked out.
Any tips appreciated.

skyguy, I've had good results using fawn distress calls. We usually use them in summer/early fall, and they can be effective. The key to using them is to "put feeling" into calling. You gotta "sound" like your in distress to get good results. Give it time and eventually you'll get something to come. The downside to using in a hunting situation as I see it, is that any deer comming usually comes fast and is VERY hyped up. They don't stand still, always moving searching for the fawn. It'd be tough to draw a bow on them, gun would be easier, but usually by mid-late sept, haven't had much luck in getting them to come to the call. Pick yourself a couple good spots for stands, and put time into them. Time in the field is your best ally to getting that first deer. Taz

Sky Guy

I mostly use the doe bleat in the early season and latter in the year will mix in the fawn call and buck grunts. I blind call with a doe bleat several times an hour and it works.....both bucks and does will come to see who is making the noise. IMO calling works better in heavy cover when deer can't see that far and need to come over and take a look. It seems when I call in the oaks there is less response than in the swamp.

Good luck

hey sky_guy, that thing should be working for you this time of year, i've used it during our season starting oct 15 and it'll work, like the other post mentioned when they show up it'll be quick if there are any doe with fawns around they come running, even the does w/o fawns will show, i know you geagia boys are already hunting but if you could find a field were the does are feeding and try you're call you'd see what kind of response you could get, one little blow and they may look, you act like your really in trouble and they'll come running, oh yea so will the coyotes[:@], if your not getting shots don't be afraid to blow it deer are very curious, had a friend one time would not quit blowing his grunt call i started to go shoot him, then i saw him turn my direction and raise both hands, he'd killed a nice 10. best of luck
