Buck Grunting Saturday,Call Back Or Not?

I got out Saturday morning in a spot where some nice Bucks were taken last year. It was very windy but about a half hour after sunrise I heard my first ever Buck grunting in the wild. He was making what they call a social grunt sound so I sprayed a shot of Doe P into the air and it seemed to draw him a little closer. I heard him again but he was in such thick cover I never got a look at him. Would calling back have brought him in a little closer? I have never called a Deer before so I was wondering what some of you would have done in my situation. Thanks

You'll never know now lol. I got a buck roar call I really like. I call quite often... it has been pretty effective for me. Once they get teritorial they will come rite into it and investigate. A mature buck may not always get within range tho if your in a somewhat open spot in the woods they will stop and look around to try to find the deer. Seeing nothing they may move on.

I guess it depends on a couple of factors. If he was downwind of you, he might have caught your sent as he got closer. If he was looking in your direction and you called to him he might very well have spotted you. On the other hand, deer are curious animals and he may have come in to investigate. I have found it to be a crapshoot most of the time. If the deer have been hunted pretty hard in your hunting area, they get educated pretty quick. Hope that helps.

Give him a few more weeks when his hormones kick in and he lets some of his "guard" down. Try grunting as well as rattling then, you'll be sure to draw him in and get a shot at him. Good Luck.
