Estimating deer size
Can someone tell me how you judge the size of a doe at 10 yrds away from 15' high. I'm talking 120 lbs plus.

Well you look at it son:biggrin:
I just make a mental note and compare. You can tell by looking at it whether it's a good shooter or not.......Least I can but idk. |
Here are a couple of tips. If it is by itself look at it's face/nose. If it's more like a 2 litre bottle it's not a fawn. Next look at the body. From front legs to back legs, if it's rectangular shape it is not a fawn. A fawn will be square shape. Then there's the obvious, if it is with other deer just compare the sizes and take out the biggest one.

hard to tell by the face....after 2 1/2 years, the jaw is done growing.
btw..its better to let the big does go...kill the small and medium size ones...the older does will be beneficial to the herd. |

Old does can't bare young therefore as far as population goes......There not contributing. They can serve as "mother hens" if you now what I'm saying. |

:) There more responsible and less likely to bed down with any old buck. Don't worry about it, You'll know one when you see one. They got a mean look in there eye and that's no lie. Saw one a few years ago that looked like it had a dark mane like a lion. I'd like to kill that deer. She had a real attitude. This deer was a real educator, good for the herd, bad for the hunter. |
